Obama supports building a mosque at ground zero

Obama read the 1st amendment. You should too.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country," Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York City and the nation.

"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."
Sounds right.

He's right. I despise Islam, but he's absolutely right. I find it insane that anybody objects to the legal construction of a mosque on private property. Imagine if Catholics were forbidden to construct churches within blocks of a school because there are priests who are guilty of pedophilia. You'd see Giuliani, Bill Donohue and the Catholic Legal launching protests and waving the Bill of Rights in the air every time a camera was within a mile radius.

Sounds like he's doing that silly political thing where a President preserves, protects and defends the Constitution of the United States.

Bastard!

I'm not crazy about a mosque or any house of worship being built on Ground Zero, but the site is private property and I support the 1st amendment. The President is 100% right.

I just find the whole thing in bad taste. It would be as if you showed up to the 9/11 victims funerals with paper airplanes and flying them around while making crashing and whooshing sound effects. It's just bad taste.

I can see why people would be angry, but not all Muslims are Jihadist extremists. We are a country founded upon basic religious freedom for all. There are no stipulations about who it applies to. And while a Mosque near ground zero might anger some people, legally there are no grounds to prohibit construction.

This whole entire "mosque at Ground Zero" bullshit is nothing but an unwarranted smear campaign that is being fully orchestrated by the main stream media. Their "facts" are so incorrect and they know it - but they still continue to push on with their horseshit, fear-based media blitz.

First of all, it's not just a mosque; it's more a community center. Secondly, it's not going to be built on Ground Zero.

I honestly do not see this going well for anyone. Even if they get the thing up, which feels like a kick in he nuts, without any bloodshed they will never have any peace while terrorist are still going about their "business".

Here's the thing though, terrorists have been going about their business long before 9/11. They're not all Muslim.

I think that comparison is a little bit off. The thing with the funeral is not just bad taste, it's what sociologists call "morally anomic behaviour" (which means behaviour, that is so out of line in terms of morally adequate or acceptable behaviour that it threatens to disturb social peace). But only those who secretly or unknowingly/unconsciously think that all people of islam are to blame for 9/11 can think building a mosque near the 9/11 site is being of bad taste. For someone who doesn't equate islam with the 9/11 attacks, a mosque is like any other religious building a building of peaceful worship. If it was a mosque by the Taliban, who openly support what happend at 9/11, that would be a different story.
I remember someone saying something like "it's like putting something German next to Auschwitz". That's just wrong thinking. The generations following the war who repented, apologized and recompensed are not absolutely and boundlessly to blame for the Nazi war crimes of their fathers or grandfathers. And most Jews know that. At least two third of the buildings and memorial places in Auschwitz are German, build by Germans or at least financed by Germans. It's not just not bad taste, it's in fact a matter a sign of good will, to commemorate Auschwitz in that way.

Yeah a real community center that will always do "community center" things.

Behind closed doors it's a different matter.

The fact that it's being built a 2 blocks away means squat. Human remains from those slaughtered were found some distance from GZ.

In the past Muslims built mosques at those places which they were victorious over their adversary.

I believe this "community center" is no different.

The imam of this thing isn't some dove or lamb. He refuses to denounce Hamas.

Do you think this imam will have Jewish and Christian services at this mosque......er community center?

Who cares? They can build a Scientology church for all I care.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let's not get crazy. At least Muslims don't believe that a galactic ruler named Xenu assembled billions of citizens under the guise of tax inspections, then paralyzed them, and flew them to Earth using DC-8s. Once he got them there, he put them near volcanoes and destroyed them by detonating simultaneous hydrogen bombs. The souls of the victims (thetans) were then blown into the sky where they were captured by an electronic ribbon and sucked into vacuum zones. They were then transported to gigantic cinemas and forced to watch a 3D super colossal motion picture for 36 days in order to implant them with misleading data.

Fuck, man. That makes a guy walking on water seem believable. I'm all for shooting Scientology adherents for sport. Just sayin'...

No it's the same mentality. Btw I said it and stand by it.

The "something German" would be a monument to the SS which would be grossly offensive just like a muslim center two blocks from GZ.

I haven't forgotten what was done in the name of islam on 9/11.

Just a reminder folks: we already have a thread about the building of the mosque/community center/facility. This is a thread about the President's support for it.
