nintendo/super nintendo > new systems

Call me old school but I am not a big fan of video games on these newer systems, I think they take too much concentration LOL ... I much prefer older "2d" games like Mario and the stuff you would see on nintendo and sega genesis...no matter how much technology has improved and how nice the graphics are no other system can ever top the old school ones!

I find it to be kind of opposite. Of course there is a balance when you really think about it. You had games like Mario and simple games where it was more of a point A to point B type of game. Work your way from left to right to finish the level and move on to the next. Nowadays games are 3D and technology allows different approaches to completing a level or game itself. However look back on games like Final Fantasy, Link, or Castlevania on NES those games weren't your typical left to right finish level. They actually had you write stuff down, figure out how to get past certain environments, or allow you to find hidden items to make the game all the more enjoyable.

I would say playing one of the dozens of shooters nowadays is a bit more mindless than playing a game like ChronoTrigger, Final Fantasy, Link, heck even Mario. Of course after you learn everything in a game you no longer have to think too much as you know where everything is. Seeing how games nowadays are much bigger it is harder to acquire that kind of knowledge without many, many, many hours playing it.

I think what You Miss is simplicity of a game where you can sit down and not feel pressured in having to learn a robust tutorial of how to use your character and play around in the virtual world.

I enjoy old classic games as well as the new games. What I don't enjoy seeing nowadays is games almost blending in with one another and a lack of originality and creativity.

Yes, I enjoyed the simplicity of just going from point a to point b , it was just a straight line (with obstacles of course) but I find they were much more fun because im sorry I have add and a bad sense of direction, these newer games I always get lost in and end up giving up...

There still some games that stick to the point A to point B formula. Have you checked out the Bloodrayne game for 360? Or Rochard. Braid.

Either way there are still games like that today.

games that get too non-linear **** me off. i never liked doom and quake and all that **** where you gotta go everyfuckingwhere to find a different coloured key then try to find your way back. or wide open areas where there is no direction.

granted, i dont need to be completely spoon-fed but there's a line. if a cave splits off into 5 different rooms which splits off into another 5 each, its too much.

right now, im playing snes and gba. i own a wii but thats what i do on it, play snes and other retroesque games.

and yes, im sure there are more linear games but im just not into the whole ps3, xbox stuff. thats a different breed of gaming that i just dont feel. i dont need the HD graphics to be happy. gimme a 4, 6 buttons top and im good.

I strongly agree that old 2D games are still so good and never get old but at the same time I love the modern consoles and games such as the 360 and 3DS, graphics are always improving and never fail to keep amazing me. I love gaming! :D

I have to agree. The old 2D games mostly sucked graphics-wise. And as far as story goes, how do you compare Arkham City or Skyrim to Starfox or Sonic the Hedgehog? 2D scrollers were fun for what they were, and I still love Dr. Mario, but saying the old systems were better is about as true as claiming that Windows 2000 was the best EVAR! The tech is better, the games are better, and the old cartridge systems are best left to museums.

I understand the nostalgia, but thats pretty much blatantly false

all in all though, graphics do not make the game on its own. storyline (if applicable), playability, and, most important of all, how much fun you have makes the game if you ask me. graphics or not.

you can make a piece of **** game look amazing with graphics and high def capabilities but its still crap in the end.

games are meant to be fun. fun is not based on looks alone.

that's all quite true, but the games that take advantage of all those things and put it into one package (Skyrim) crush the **** out of old games. Don't get me wrong, I still love my old games (Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Kazooie are still in my all time top 5) but a lot of it is just because it reminds you of when you were a ***.

but weren't they awesome as a ***?

if it was good then, thats gotta say something for the game itself, minus that wonderful nostalgia. ;)

the double effect of awesomeness is both a good game and the added bonus nostalgia.

i just played mario world on snes, and thats just a purely awesome creative and fun game. the snes was capable of better graphics than that but choose to hold back. simplicity is sometimes a wonderful thing when done in the proper context.

of course, to agree with you, it doesnt mean a game cant have amazing graphics and be totally awesome. but it does seem to be more of a rarity. god knows why! i dont get that at all.

i do think that maybe new game developers lose sight of the gameplay and get carried away with the graphics and more so, the marketing of the games. games are now created just like movies are. they consider who their target audiences are, age groups, popular aspects, pop culture, and all that ****. i think, often, that game developers need to step back and focus on just good games.

you dont need a mutli-million dollar budget for a fun game. its amazing how much money and how many people are involved in game development now. millions! i just read an interview by shigeru miyamoto talking about just that. the growth of the development team every time a mario game gets made.

but yes, i love gaming. always have. in fact, i sport video game tattoos. but the highest level of gaming ill ever need is a ps1. honestly, ill live with an nes, snes, and a gba.

ps1 makes the cut for ff7 only. man, that was a beautiful fucking game.

look back at it now, and those graphics look horrible. but the game is brilliant. ah, the good old days.

we did use our imagination a lot more. perhaps, thats part of the problem.

have we gotten lazier?

I have to admit, I never played much SNES or Sega Genesis. I'm too damn young. When I was a ***, it was N64 and Playstation (PS1), and by then, games were a lot more complex. I played the **** out of Dr. Mario, but it was "Dr. Mario 64", technically. And FF7 was a right of passage in my house. My *** and my sisters and I still get stupid when a FF game comes out, though none have been as fun because I think it was more an "in the moment" thing. Since then we've bonded over music games instead. My *** wouldn't know what to do with Skyrim if it bit her in the ass, but she likes hearing the stories.

And yeah, graphics don't make or break a game, gameplay does. I fucking LOVED the Doctor Who platformer they put out for ipod/ipad. Really straightforward, crappy graphics (here's when a hi-def Amelia Pond crawling on all fours would have been nice), but it was FUN.

When I see people claim that the older systems were better, I gotta wonder why they make the claim. If it's someone younger than me, I REALLY grow suspicious. I idiots like Olivia Munn who claim to be "nerds" but then can't even say "Fette" right (she once claimed to LOVE the mc chris song "Fetty's Vette"). Sometimes people are trolling just to troll, and other times, like Munn, they're just playing an angle to grow a fan base, but the proof is in the pudding: if the old systems were REALLY better, we'd still be playing them.

we've gotten desensitized. everything's gotta be the biggest and fastest or else we just don't bother. I think that's why game makers *cough*infinity ward *cough* feel like they have to overload their games with as much stuff as possible.

Agreed.

Games these days don't hold my attention very long. Plus, I would have my NES, super Nes, and genisis for 10 years plus in perfect working order. Now you gotta either get a new system or get it repaired every few fuckin years! I also miss the simplicity of 2 buttons and a directional pad. Now you've got what? 100 plus buttons on the controllers? Some crazy number like that. I still like the newer games for a few days. But there just isn't any "classic" games coming out.

xbox controllers are fucking ridiculous. i know a couple of people with them and they are horrid. way fucking more buttons that needed.

i also hated the sega controller with the 3 buttons. it never fit the games. if you played something like mortal kombat or street fighter, fucking forget about it. pressing start to change between kicks and punches was stupid.

nes was fine. snes controllers were perfect. thats all you needed. 4 base buttons with an L and an R with select and start. perfect.

now the joystick component is standard with the d-pad which is hardly ever used.

Give me Tempest, Dragon Warrior III, and Super Punch-Out! any day. There's a reason why "retro"game compilations on advanced game systems sell so well. Same with television DVD box sets.
