Michelle Obama, daughters visiting Las Vegas

Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha are visiting Las Vegas after stopping in South Dakota on a family trip.

A spokeswoman for McCarran International Airport confirmed that the first lady was expected to arrive in Las Vegas Wednesday night. The visit wasn't expected to affect flight operations.

White House officials say the Obamas are on a private family trip to the West.

The Obamas visited Mount Rushmore on Wednesday before heading to Las Vegas.

Yawn.
Will E. doesn't need "facts". He already has a conclusion in mind (i.e. Obamas are socialist, hypocritical ect.) and automatically links whatever he can to try and justify it.

Whether we like it or not, taxpayers cover all Presidential (and familial) travel and security costs. We may not be paying for their hotel or food, but all air travel and security details are, without doubt, paid for by the taxpayer.

If they are taking Air Force 1, the operation costs run a little more than $180,000 per flight hour and security detail costs roughly $40,000/day. With what looks to be about a 10 day trip, with around 12-15 total flight hours, the bill to the taxpayers will total just above $2m. Not to mention that if Michelle Obama happens to have any appearances that are "political in nature," (which she no doubt will) the bulk of the trip, arguably more than 90% of the whole, will be written off as business, and therefore paid by tax dollars. Its just the way it works.

Obviously, Obama and his family are neither the first, nor the last Presidential family to take vacations. But to assume that we, as taxpayers, are not footing the bill for air travel and security at the very least, is a tad ignorant.

Not only that, they were in Mexico for spring break. I guess it's safe when you got secret service protection.

:yesyes:

You're a moron. Were you bitching when this happened? Get a life:facepalm:

Well for one, I really could care less about any president going on vacation. But wasn't that long ago when the guy said "the days of taking the corporate jet to las vegas are over"? :dunno: What do you call those planes (yes, planes) that serve to take them all over the place? Air Force One is a corporate jet anyway. But I digress.

Do they deserve vacation? Yes. Do I have a problem with where they choose to go? No, but at the same time they should not critizice people who choose to go to those same places. Pres. Bush was critiziced whenever he went on vacation, even when he decided to spend it in his ranch in Crawford. So for democrats a republican can't do anything right, for a republican a democrat can't do anything right. Whatever. So anyway, I wish them the best and I do hope they have fun.

Agreed with one minor point. Bush kept going back to Crawford because no one else wanted his ass in their country. I imagine even Tony Blair would have been, "He wants to come here, for how fucking long?"

Let us never forget what a detestable schmuck our latest 2-term sphincter-in-chief was.

This is a ridiculous argument. The president, and his family, have security needs because of his job. They are going to go on vacation - it's one of the most stressful jobs in the world, and not just for the president, but for his family, too. Why begrudge them some vacation time? Just because it costs money to send them on vacation?

Sorry, that's part of being America. America's political leaders are targets for crazies and terrorists. You can't have it both ways - you talk about how we need guns to protect ourselves, because there are bad people out there (you often cite Muslims, as do others of your ilk), but you refuse to protect the president and his family during their time leading the nation. Very big double standard, and just one more example of how stupid you can be.

If this were a problem for any president rather than this president, someone should've piped up and changed private travel restrictions on the president during Reagan's, or Bush Sr's, or Clinton's, or Bush Jr's, terms. As that's not been done, anyone suddenly bringing it up is guilty of partisan hypocrisy.

And just to be clear, I don't give a flying fuck about any president's travel expenses. If I think someone's lying down on the job I'll vote them out next time, but otherwise as lurkingdurk points out being in the First Family itself is an incredible stressor, and if every so often they want to take a step away from Washington, then as a taxpayer I'm fine with whatever miniscule proportion of my taxes go to that. It's a pittance compared to ensuring the security and well-being of our nation's chief executive and his loved ones.

This is only brought up by conservative jagoffs looking for any excuse to attack Obama but without the brains to find real ones (which there are).

Best message in the room. I love this guy.

OK, let me see if I all of the facts. You are bitching about the First Lady and the kids going on vacation? Grasp at straws much? Are we, the tax payers footing the bill? Yes, but we also payed for Senate hearings on baseball players doing drugs (Steroids '00's, Cocaine '80's), whether football players suffered concussions and whether or not Clinton got an extra-marital hummer while in office. I'm sure that you can find more pressing issues to bitch about with Daddy O.

Bush took vacations all the time. Are you saying that if you were the POTUS shiver that you would never take a vacation? I highly doubt that. Have enough pride to come up with a legitimate beef.
