A metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. In futurism and science fiction, the term is often described as a hypothetical iteration of the Internet as a single, universal virtual world that is facilitated by the use of virtual and augmented reality headsets.

The term "metaverse" has its origins in the 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash as a portmanteau of "meta" and "universe." Various metaverses have been developed for popular use such as virtual world platforms like Second Life. Some metaverse iterations involve integration between virtual and physical spaces and virtual economies, often including a significant interest in advancing virtual reality technology.

The term has seen considerable use as a buzzword for public relations purposes to exaggerate development progress for various related technologies and projects. Information privacy and user addiction are concerns within metaverses, stemming from challenges facing the social media and video game industries as a whole.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
I think I'll stay in this verse, where I am the KING, of all I survey.

A woman claimed she was virtually groped by a gang of male avatars in Meta's metaverse

It's one thing to subject someone to verbal harassment. Yelling hate speech or discriminatory comments can be just as hurtful (& even criminal) online or offline, and people are banned all the time for that. I support her there.

But virtual GROPING?? I draw the line there. If my avatar/character bumps into another, whether it was consensual or not doesn't matter - it's not sexual assault.
If I'm in an MMO and someone attacks or kills my avatar, I'm not going to sue them for assault or murder.

No, just no.

How Mark Zuckerberg Led the Tech Industry Into a Metaverse Wasteland - May 10, 2023
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/202...a-ridiculous-idea-where-did-it-come-from.html

AI summary:

The article "The Metaverse Was a Ridiculous Idea. Where Did It Come From?" by John Herrman in New York Magazine argues that the metaverse was a ridiculous idea that never really had a chance of succeeding. The author traces the origins of the metaverse to the early days of the internet, when people began to speculate about a future in which everyone would live their lives online. However, as the internet has evolved, it has become clear that this vision of the future is not realistic. The author argues that the metaverse is a "supreme executive fantasy" that is based on a misunderstanding of how people actually use the internet. He also points out that the metaverse is being promoted by tech companies who are more interested in making money than in creating a new way of life. In conclusion, the author argues that the metaverse is a ridiculous idea that is unlikely to ever succeed.

Here are some additional details from the article:

The metaverse was first mentioned in the 1992 novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.
In 2018, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company was working on a metaverse project.
In 2021, the term "metaverse" was mentioned over 300,000 times in the media.
However, the hype around the metaverse has since died down.
In January 2023, Microsoft announced that it was shutting down its virtual-workspace platform AltSpaceVR.
In February 2023, Meta laid off 100 employees from its metaverse team.
