Me and those darn animals

As some of you probably remember, I got a new little fella couple weeks ago when a hungry, dehydrated little kitty wandered into the yard.

Well, we just *had* to outdo that, so now by the end of the week, I've probably just purchased two Tennessee Walker riding horses. :helpme:

I love horses, and the wife's been a rider since she was little. I'm just not sure picking up two of them right now was the best idea, but it was that or have them starve to death at this lazy bitch's house because she was "too depressed" to get out of bed for days at a time to feed the 12+ horses on her property, dogs, and etc.

So anyway- now I'll have horses. Haven't owned one in about 5 years. Should be fun.

Tennessee Walkers are beautiful, even-tempered, and gentle horses, hedonis. You are a fortunate man, sir. I think your wife is going to get many years of happiness from the newest additions to y'all's "family". :)

Are they both black, sorrels, or roans?

Yeah, we've ridden these two before. They were both a little overweight at the time, so I spent the day walking like a bow-legged rancher. That's one of the reasons we are buying them- they *were* overweight. Now we're going to have to bulk them up for winter because they've lost so much weight due to neglect.

And yes- love the walkers, especially when they do their thing. Like gliding on glass!

Edit- Sorry- one's a black, the other's a roan.

I hope they don't eat you out of house and home. :) :glugglug:

Well, the place we'll be boarding includes hay and grain in the monthly fee, and it's pretty reasonable at $175 per horse. Considering the place also has indoor and outdoor training arenas, and 10 forested acres with a trail, it's pretty nice.

I can't wait to get them out there. Since the wife is a stay-at-homer now, she'll have tons of time to work with them.

WHat? WHat? I'm not a meany gun guy... :( I gave up the profession with the gun. Now I just own lots of animals and work with computers.

Please pay no attention to the peanut gallery, Hedonis.

My experience with horses is strictly limited to my time in the military. I confess, I don't know Jack about horses. My experience was limited to just interacting with the folks who rode the steeds.

BUT, one of my Army buddies is a 'born horse rider'. He owns over 40 horses, he teaches lessons and manages his own ranch.

From the limited exposure I have through him - I've come to the conclusion that horses are gentle creatures .... with a pugnacious, independent and imprudent mind of their own!

I learned my lessons the hard way - I manage riding a horse .... BUT, I am no "horse rider".
But I also saw the deep bond humans form with their steed.

I wish you, the Wife and the family with many years of happiness along side your latest "family member". :)

cheers,

Nice we have a lot of horses out my way but they are lot of work to up keep them.

Glad to hear about the horses, my friend. Sounds like you are doing a terrific thing in taking ownership of the two of them. I know they will be in good hands and they will likely help to bring you and the little lady many wonderful experiences. Myself, I've only been on a horse a few times in my life and I have loved it. It really seems like the type of thing that gets more enjoyable the more you learn about and experience it. :glugglug:

Know how you feel H.
My brother went to the store only for a loaf of bread a few weeks ago and met an old man with a Rottie. She was called Katie and jumped all over my brother and he got talking to the guy.
Apparently the old guy had been stiffed with taking on the dog and the person wanting rid said it would grow no bigger than a Yorkie Terrier. However, you know how big Rotties get and he couldn't look after Katie any more as he was old and she was too big for his flat.
Well, when my brother asked what he was going to do he said he would have to have her put to sllep if no one would take her. Therefore, my brother came home with a loaf of bread and a new dog. Hehe!
The worst part of it is that I was taking the piss out of him for being a soft touch and told him that the old guy was probably being just like the guy who palmed the animal off on him and just didn't want poor Katie anymore.
As you can magine, this tickled me pink. However, I now have Katie as my brothers girlfriend doesn't want the dog in their new home.
I'm such a sucker for animals!

Awww... one of my dogs is a Rott- I don't think I'll own another kind of dog now. Of course, thanks to everyone for all the kind words.

D-Rock, think my love of animals will get me anywhere with Erica? Even the wife likes her... :nanner:

I've had two Rotties now. This new one Katie is a flyweight at about 10 stone but my other Tara who died last month was like a bear at 14 stone, both big bitches but Katie has a tail as we can't doc them anymore in the uk. Not that I would want to, it gives her charactor. Only problem is she knocks thigs over with it!
Don't think I would own another breed either.

Wow- freedom, eh? That's silly that you can't doc the tails, but what the hell are ya gonna do?

As far as whether I'm Noah? Just call me Hedonis Almighty! :angels:

I like the idea, I really do.
I wish I knew more about horses, my sister lives on a ranch north of LA, and everytime I'm down there I want to bring a horse home, but alas I realize that I'd be a terrible horse keeper. :(
Oh well, maybe one day

Im a bit of a sucker when it comes to strays and sick animals.....

But I stick to the ones I can carry!!

Good on you!!

I stand corrected- there is a chestnut and a bay. My main ride will be the bay, as she's the older, more mellow horse.

And as of today- bought and paid for! We take them to the new place on Saturday. :partysml:
