One day after receiving the sad news that Sparky Anderson was suffering from dementia, we've learned the even sadder news that managing legend has died at age 76.

A family spokesman told the Associated Press than Anderson had died of complications from dementia, for which his family had placed him in hospice care.

Anderson was, of course, the talented colorful manager of both Cincinnati's Big Red Machine, which won back-to-back titles in 1975-76 and the memorable 1984 Detroit Tigers, which started the season 35-5 en route to the franchise's last World Series title. A man of strong principles, he was respected throughout the game and was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2000.

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
The first manager to lead teams to titles in both leagues. Truly a baseball legend, he will be missed. ESPN has been all over the coverage today with interviews and stories about him from people who knew him. Great stuff.

Sad day for baseball. :(

RIP, Sparky. You will be missed.:angels::(

It's been a bad year for the memories of my youth and teen years. First Ernie and now Sparky. Time marches on.

A legend in the game. A truly sad day for baseball.

Postal Paranoiac
I lived in Toronto in 1984 when the Tigers had their last really impressive run. Captain Hook delivered the goods, and I had to watch my Blue Jays get frustrated. I had a helluva lotta respect for this guy ever since. God Bless Sparky, and, God, let him manage your best team in Heaven. Just remember...he might pull your starting pitcher if he walks a few.

R.I.P to this guy

his name represents what a true baseball manager is all about...a guy who knows how to win
