List of Forbidden Rock Bands in the USSR in 1985

This is a translated list of Western rock bands that Soviet Komsomol (a Communist Party for young people) singled out for deletion from the list of permissible music to be played at Soviet dance clubs, due to their "ideologically harmful compositions." I never saw it before because it was for internal use only, but I felt the invisible presence of such lists throughout my entire life in the Motherland.

Now that I live in New York, my ******** showed me this page her professor of Russian history distributed for discussion. It is taken from a book by Alexei Yurchak "Everything Was Forever, until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation." The chapter is called "True Colors of Communism: King Crimson, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd." The entire text can be found in Google books. Scroll to page 215 for this diagram. Read the chapter for more context.

Very interesting that Yazoo, Bohannon, The B-52's, Donna Summer, Blondie, Talking Heads... All ****** in the former USSR in the '80s. And Julio Iglesias too!

How do they get homosexuality from Canned Heat?

And Ramones is the only punk band that doesn´t support ********, even Kiss does. :D

Not only that, but the Village People were there...for ********. I don't think the people responsible for the list actually listened to music.

The Village People? hahahaha

Maybe Beat On The Brat was what got their knickers in a twist about perceived ********?

It would suck to have to go without The Ramones and Iron Maiden but there's more groups or singers on that list like The Village People and Julio Iglesias that I wish I could never hear again. Doesn't seem like that bad of a trade off actually!

It was Styx and 10cc that jumped off the page when I read it. Stan is right, I don't think they actually listened to the music.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Hell, a lot of my favorite bands aren't even on there. But a lot that I like are, so...all I can say is, Russia sucks.
