I'm a software engineer. Specifically I write image processing software. Stuff like edge detection, sharpening, noise removal and such. While reading technical documents, like

on wavelet compression and

on orthogonal pyramid transformations, I kept seeing the same image (attached below) used as an
Premium Link
Upgrade
.
After investigating the image's origin, it turns out the image is of Lena Sjööblom, Playboy's November 1972. In 1973, while experimenting with the earliest forms of the Internet (DarpaNet) and image compression and transmission, a couple of grad students at the University of Southern California scanned this image after getting bored of their usual suite of test images. She then became the first model and subject of erotic photography to be trasmitted over the fledgling Internet.
Here is what David Munson, Editor-in-Chief of IEEE'S TRANSACTIONS ON IMAGE PROCESSING (industry journal where papers like those listed above might be published):
Other interesting notes:
- Playboy long since decided to give up enforcing copyright action on this particular image. In fact, the use of this image caused the November 1972 issuse to be their Premium Link Upgrade .
- Premium Link Upgrade is a link to an uncropped, high res version.
- In 1988, she was interviewed by some Swedish computer related publication, and she was pleasantly amused by what had happened to her picture. That was the first she knew of the use of that picture in the computer business.

I think it is safe to assume that the Lena image became a standard in our "industry" for two reasons. First, the image contains a nice mixture of detail, flat regions, shading, and texture that do a good job of testing various image processing algorithms. It is a good test image! Second, the Lena image is a picture of an attractive woman. It is not surprising that the (mostly male) image processing research community gravitated toward an image that they found attractive.
