Re: Prostitution

I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be legalized. It's already legal in Nevada... has been for a long time, in fact. The most advatageous benefit of legalizing prostitution is the fact that it becomes regulated. The prostitues have to maintain high health standards, periodic AIDS tests, periodic STD tests, etc.

It's a business. The world's original sin.

Re: Prostitution

hmm if it is legalized it should only be in certain areas and at certain times. I dont want my little sister walking home from school and have to see that if it is in certain citys and lets say after 11pm fine and there should be some company that they all work for that administrates WEEKLY testing i think that on the positive side law enforcement would be able to focus on more important issues

Re: Prostitution

I see the outlawing of prostitution as being based upon an outdated (IMO) principle, that being that we can, and should, legislate morality. I think it's fair to say that that philosophy doesn't work.

Conversely, legalizing prostitution accomplishes a great deal. The girls are able to work in a much healthier environment, the spread of STD's is hampered, organized crime and pimps are taken out of the equation, and, oh yeah, the gov't gets a nice little source of tax revenue! It's being done in Nevada as we speak, and the results have been very good.

BTW, once again, I have nothing to gain personally from taking this position, as hiring prostitutes is not my cuppa tea. :)

I agree, it would take some women out of some very bad situations.

I agree QBall.
And well said Parker.

But it is not as legal in Nevada as most people appear to think. It is only legal in certain localities that can only be small in population size. And it has to take place in a brothel. That in itself is fine. However, this means that unless individual women have the wherewithal to start their own 'clubs' - which apparently are not THAT easy to do - they are stuck as virtual slaves. In the sense that they have to pay a large cut to the brothel owners. So there is still pimping.
I believe the life of the prostitute will not improve (and I bet you if the lives of hookers improves then society as a whole will benefit; believe it or not) until they are able to act as their own managers. And as it is in Nevada - that's not very likely. At least, not very often.

Funny enough, I am a Canadian and I did not realize until recently that it is legal here. It is illegal to pimp. It is illegal to solicit or perform the transaction in a public place (i.e. street walkers are illegal up here). And it is illegal to perform in a bawdy house (i.e. brothel).
But apparently, from what I have read, as long as an escort and a customer go to a neutral location (i.e. a hotel room), then it is legal. And advertising is legal also.

BTW - everyone on here that is a fan of pornography had better hope that the government does not legalize drugs anytime soon. Because if they did (i.e. have them only available in 'drug clubs', but legal), the number of women that would do pornography and (especially) prostitution would decline (imo) VERY noticeably.

Which gives me an idea for a new thread - though I can guess what the response would be (for better or worse).

Re: Prostitution

Why, thank you for the support, sir. I figured that my opinion would be amongst the minority actually.

In regards to your new thread, I vote for the legalization of marijuana. Hard-core drugs (i.e., cocaine, opium, etc.) are just entirely too dangerous... even in the hands of the government. Wait, let me rephrase that, especially in the hands of the government.

Re: Prostitution

I live in the Netherlands, it's legal around here. Of course, bad pimps and loverboys and the like can't be stopped, but they certainly CAN be watched over. There's not much taxes, and the last years there have even been some aids/soa tests been going on. I actually heard you can ask for some kind of certificate when you go to a prostitute proving she doesn't have any diseases. So IMO it should be legalized, if only for the health of both the ho's and the clients.

Re: Prostitution

it's a service! people who want to go to prostitutes pay for a sevice, so there's a need for prostitutes.
Nowbody should be forced to prostitute themself though.

Re: Prostitution

I'll have to say yes on this. What people want to do with their bodies is their own buisness, as far as I'm concerned. As long as they want to do it.

Re: Prostitution

It should be legal, even though it's not my sort of thing it probably is the oldest profession around, most prostitutes are shooting smack in their veins when you seem them anyway, harsh stereotype but true.

I believe Brothels should be legal but I don't believe street prostitution should be legal.

Goddamn. We agree on something finally.

Street walkers can't be legalized. That is just dangerous and it won't take away from the crack whore aspect of the prostitution game.

Brothels, massage parlors, etc should be legalized and organized so it's safe.

Re: Prostitution

Well the only reason why hookers walk the street, and expose themselves to danger is because alot of times they don't have the option of working in a safer legal environment such as brothel or a massage parlor. They have no choice but to live that type of lifestyle. I think if prostitution was to be legalized and there was a choice created where they could work a brothel, most of them wouldn't choose to deal with pimps and be out on the streets.

I am aware that prostitution in Nevada is only legal under specific circumstances, but I see that my previous post implied otherwise.

Thanks for the correction. :hatsoff:
