learning a new language

So I was watching TV and here comes a commercial with Michael Phelps saying how he learned Chinese with Rosetta Stone. Of course, I'd really like to learn another language. I'm fluent in both English and Spanish but I'd still like to learn more, maybe Arabic, Korean, Japanese, German, or Russian, can't choose which one. Arabic to learn and understand more about the enemies of my country, Korean...ditto (North Korea), Japanese because I love Japanese girls, German because I'm a fan of Rammstein, and Russian because I'm sort of learning how to reading cyrilic.

Now what would be the best way of learning a new language on my free time and on my own? Does Rosetta Stone work as good as advertised? It does seen a bit expensive at about $500 and of course, I'm not planning to go to any of those countries in the foreseable future, maybe Italian would be more useful as I am planning a trip there. How about all the other language software like Instant Immersion? Those of you who learned a language other than your native language, how did you do it? What would you all recommend?
