Laptop Help?

Recently my laptop died.
I bought it way back in 2006ish, it's a Toshiba and it runs the vista virus. I ran it for years until recently, having rather a fetish for body paint, I opened a link...

...and downloaded the video, onlyto find something claiming to be sweeping my system for spyware installed itself. I went to my local PC store, they said take your recovery CD, reinstall windows.
I did. But I lost everything. Not just my porn (homemade and otherwise) but my English-Russian-Greek Dictionary, my games, you name it. I could only salvage some 2Gig of data on my memory stick.
I was using Vista with Firefox and Avast antivirus. I had been using Avast in combination with spybot before that, but removed Spybot.
After re-installing windows it developed a fault I didn't know about - switching the wireless off would cause a BSOD. I was installing all those old windows updates when I accidently hit the wireless switch and BANG, corrupt windows, hard-drive out, formatted, Vista virus back on and my wallet a (very essential) £50 lighter.

I'm now using Vista with Avast again (although strangely, the avast I use now has an orange Icon whereas the Avast I use on my desktop has a blue one... This worries me) but this time using Googles Chrome browser.
I'm looking into adopting Linux (Gnome or Ubuntu and running it from my USB disk, so that I can run games on my windows when I want by simply removing the USB, but browse the porn, I mean net, on my Linux USB.
So I ask you PC people, what do you think of my plan to run linux off my 2Gig memory stick with whatever antivirus I can find to work with it?
Would you recommend a particular linux? A particular antivirus? A particular browser?

Ive still got windows XP & using AVG Anti-Virus free version & have had no problems with it...I use IE8 too & although its security is not as good as Google Chrome of Firefox, it does the job....No idea about Linux though, sorry! :o

It was about 24 minutes between posts. That line doesn't really work when there are time stamps on each post.

Aside from that for future reference use a wonderful free security tool called McAfee SiteAdvisor. Any link you come across, never been to, take it to google and it will show how safe the site is.

Also check out Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, and MalwareBytes. Those are free too.

In the meantime wait for ShayD. He might grace us all with his vast knowledge of the computer. Rumor has it that ShayD made an algorithm debunking the G-spot, but feminist groups across America threatened him PETA style violent antics. This guy knows what's what about computers and the intertubenets!

Mint is probably a good one for you to start with, or Puppy Linux, just because those are two relatively easy to work with OSes, and they're portable. Honestly, if you're thinking of switching to Linux, you're probably better off either running it as a fully partitioned OS, or running something like Wubi within Vista to get to Ubuntu/Kubuntu etc... everything else on Linux is really a matter of preference.
