Juliana Jay Harkavy[1] (born January 1, 1985) is an American actress writer and singer. She is known for portraying Rebecca in Dolphin Tale, Jessie in To Write Love on her Arms, and Alisha in the television series The Walking Dead. Her roles include a starring role in the horror film Last Shift, and a reprise of her role as Rebecca in Dolphin Tale 2.[2][3][4][5][6] She is currently a series regular on The CW superhero series Arrow, portraying Dinah Drake / Black Canary.[7]

Early life and education

Harkavy was born in New York City. She is the daughter of Berta Carela and Michael Harkavy, who is the former Senior Vice president of Warner Bros. Entertainment Worldwide Publishing, Kids' WB Music, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.[citation needed] Her professional acting career began when she was 10 years old.[citation needed]

Harkavy trained at the Young Actors Space in Sherman Oaks, California for nine years. She attended her first year of high school at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, where she became fluent in French,[citation needed] and did part of her schooling in the South of France. She earned her high school diploma from the Milken Community High School in Los Angeles, California.[citation needed]After high school, Harkavy attended The Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where she majored in Theater in the Sanford Meisner studio.[8]
Career

Harkavy's first acting job was at age 10 in a commercial for the Fox Kids series Goosebumps, based on the popular horror-book series.[citation needed] Her first role in a major motion picture was an uncredited role in the 1995 version of A Little Princess, directed by Alfonso Cuarón.[citation needed]

Harkavy starred in the 2011 film If You Only Knew about early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. She stars as Jessica Loren in the horror film Last Shift.[9][10][11]

Harkavy starred in the 2010 short film Whatever Lola Wants. Nominated for a Best Actress Award at the 2011 University of Miami Canes Film Festival[12] Harkavy is the star in the short film The Lost Doll directed by James Walhberg.[13]

Harkavy plays Alisha, a survivor involved with the Governor on The Walking Dead. She appeared in two episodes: "Dead Weight" and "Too Far Gone".[14]

In 2016 she was cast in the fifth season of the CW show Arrow, in the recurring role of Detective Tina Boland,[15] whose true name is revealed to be Dinah Drake, acting as the new Black Canary.[7] She was promoted to series regular for the show's sixth season, which began airing in the fall of 2017.[16]
Personal life

Harkavy has described herself as "a Dominican Jew", although her mother was born Catholic.[17][18] She also said that her ancestors were from Russia, Hungary, the Dominican Republic, Africa, and China.[19]

She has lived in New York, New Mexico, New Jersey, California, Florida, and France.[citation needed] On June 19, 2014, she married Peter Christopher Kupchick (son of State Rep. Brenda Kupchick and Peter Kupchick) .[20]

Juliana Harkavy is an American actress of Dominican, Russian, African, Chinese, and Hungarian descent. Born on New Years Day in New York City and raised in Los Angeles, Harkavy has been appearing in theater, film, and television since the age of nine. Juliana was born to mother Berta Carela, an artist, writer, and educator from Santo Domingo, and father Michael Harkavy, a Brooklyn native, also a writer, publisher, and athlete. Her only sibling, August, is thirteen years her junior. Juliana's passions were always based in the arts. She grew up playing music from the age of three, studying piano, guitar, voice, and flute. She also began writing and publishing music, stories, and poetry, as well as creating mixed-media visual art at a very young age. With a second passion for athletics and dance, she was able to create a balanced craft that would later prepare her for physically demanding roles, such as ex-military survivor Alicia in AMC's "The Walking Dead", and iconic comic book character Dinah Drake/The Black Canary on The CW's "Arrow". Harkavy studied theater under the Meisner studio at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Other working titles include: Two Streets Entertainment's "To Write Love on Her Arms", Warner Bros.'
