A spokesperson for the Paterno family has denied a report by CBS that former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has died. CBS previously reported that the 85-year-old college-football legend had succumbed in his battle with lung cancer.

The CBS report on Paterno's death was based on a tweet by Onward State, an online Penn State news outlet.

It's official now. RIP. A great football coach. A great legacy.

It's sad he left his program in a way that is about as bad as it gets and his legacy will be forever tarnished deservingly because of it. It's a good lesson for other people in positions of authority like he was. When bad things the magnitude of what happened in his program occur you don't sit around and do as little as possible when you are in a position to make a difference.

A family spokesperson confirmed to the Associated Press that Joseph Vincent Paterno has died at a State College hospital at the age of 85, just over two months after being diagnosed with a form of lung cancer.

Very Very Sad News, at Penn ST, Coach Joe was just light and inspiration of the university and State College Area. My Penn State Shirt will be warn today with great sadness in his passing.

Many of us said when he stopped coaching he would soon pass, so as wrong as it maybe, I blame Sandusky, for his death.
