Joe Manchin Ready for Gun Control Action

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), one of the strongest backers of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in the Democratic Party, said it is time to sit down and have a "sensible, reasonable" debate about gun control in light of the massacre in Newtown, Conn., and expressed an openness to banning assault weapons.

"It's time to move beyond rhetoric. We need to sit down and have a common-sense discussion and move in a reasonable way. ... Everything has to be on the table," Manchin said in an interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Monday, adding that he had just come from deer hunting with his family.

Manchin's comments are significant because he has an "A" rating from the NRA for his pro-gun positions, and the organization endorsed him as recently as October 2012.

It's nice to see that even one of the NRA's own recognizes that things have to be dealt with. A point he makes that and I've been asking and posting and yet no one has answered, pro-gun or not, is why does any civilian need automatic weapons?

In Monday's interview, Manchin was critical of assault rifles, saying no hunter needs a weapon like that, although he didn't explicitly say he would back Sen. Dianne Feinstein's (D-Calif.) ban on such weapons, which she has said she will introduce in the new year.

"I don't know anyone who in the hunting or sporting arena that goes out with an assault rifle. I don't know anybody that needs 30 rounds in the clip to go hunting," Manchin said. "I mean, these are things that need to be talked about."

It's not about need, it's about want...

I agree. If you claim you need or want guns though, you should be able to be satisfied with a gun that can't fire off 30 rounds a minute. There's no case for the right to have a weapon that you can get in the army in your house.

If you want an automatic weapon then there could be a way you can have one. Have special ranges where you can buy, sell, and use them. Carefully monitored. Special training and licencing in place. Just keep them at the range. No taking them home. If you want to use it at another range then it will be transported for you. Anyone have a problem with that?

Some use them instead of the old Shotgun to protect there cribs. I Don't think they should band them though,All that's going to accomplish is making people go out an buy even more of them now.The gun industry is gonna make a Killing off of this, either way it goes.

Not I. That's about as much of a step that could be taken in this country without causing too many problems, methinks.

Joe needs to step down.

We need weapons like this to keep tyranny at bay.

The federal government and their thugs are not special. (Except in the head)

We can have any weapon they have.

We the people, not we the federal government.

Do not join the NRA. It's a front group.

*sigh* It's pointless to respond to a thread when the OP has no idea what he's talking about, what his definitions are or what laws he's complaining about.

It's also pointless to try and have a deep and thought out conversation with a guy who won't lessen his grip on his guns or his so called "right to bear arms", even to type out a message that's trying to be belittling but failing miserably.

By the way, posting a message saying it's pointless to respond to a thread is still responding, dumbass. :hatsoff:

And you stiil have no idea what the right to keep and bear arms is, what weapons definitions are or what it is you're talking about.

I find it interesting you're so keen on attacking me when I'm not the one who's one of your own and is calling for reform. Is it because you know he's onto something?

At no point in my OP did I state my opinion as fact or try to flaunt my so-called knowledge of gun laws, but I'm willing to be that I know about as much as you do, which probably is just the 2nd Amendment. All I did was pose a question that I would be interested in hearing some logical answers for, from people for or against gun control.

This is what I'm referring too.

If a well-known hunter and supporter of the NRA is saying nobody, not even somebody who hunts, needs an assault rifle, where is there a problem if people lose them? Nobody's taking away your gun rights entirely, it's an extra measure of protection to make sure that guns like those, even when owned by people who may be responsible, don't fall into the wrong hands.

 The right to bear arms, shall not be infringed in any way.

An extra measure!?

More like a slippery slope.

Right of revolution

We need a restoration of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Not a revolution.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Sounds good, but how are those with really tiny dicks supposed to overcompensate? Trucks with really big wheels?

I think this politician owes the NRA political fund, a refund. Fucking traitorous fucking pig.
