Iron Chef Japan

I was kind of a late comer to Food Network and Fine Living Network. I became an Iron Chef America fan and then I started checking out its predecessor, Iron Chef Japan. While I like both, I am absolutely hooked on Iron Chef Japan. "If memory serves me correctly" it took me an episode or two to get used to the format and the overall flow of the show, but when I did, I was done. The skill of the chefs is incredible and there doesn't seem to be any limitation on the operating budget. If you go looking on the web, you'll see some commentary about how well the translation crew does and in my opinion, they do a spectacular job. Japanese and English don't translate literally, but these folks make the show fun, funny and educational. The one caveat to that is every once in a while, a voice that you're used to for one of the regulars will be used for another regular. A little off-putting, but not a deal killer.

Anyway, Christmas comes early. I found a website that allows us to d/l full translated episodes (or you can just stream them and watch whenever you want).

http://filehouse.ironcheffans.info/index.php

As near as I can tell, this is all legal and moral and after a few weeks of downloading well over 100 episodes I haven't had any problems with viruses, spyware or anything else. On my high-speed connection, it takes less than 5 minutes to get a full episode (although 1 out of 20 seem to take considerably longer, but I'll live with the tragedy).
One of the features that I'm absolutely over the moon about is that there is a limited search feature on the site. I used this to first d/l all the episodes where actress Mayuko Takada is a guest judge. Not only is she positively gorgeous, but she is very insightful and entertaining. Personally, I think they should have made her a permanent part of the crew.
Anyway, I'm going to take the time to coach any interested parties on how to d/l an episode, as it is different from any other d/l I've ever done (and why I waited this long to post here, in case problems cropped up).

1. You'll have to register on the site (again, no problems).
2. Find an episode you want to d/l and click.
3. You'll go to a page with a synopsis of the episode and a d/l button at the bottom - click.
4. "Select Mirror" where you can choose to d/l or to watch the stream (I always d/l in case they ever take the website down). To d/l, click "Main Server". To stream, click "Watch Video".
5. On the next screen my Nortons kicks in with that bar at the top of the screen asking me if I want to d/l. Click.
6. This is where it gets tricky. The d/l will start and automatically go to a "Temporary Folder". I haven't found a way to change this.
7. When the d/l is finished, it automatically starts and comes up on my Windows Media Player. I right-click the file name on the right side of the screen and at the bottom of the scroll I click on "Open File Location".
8. This will open one of these wierd Temorary Folders that we all have and never see and voila there's the episode you just d/l'd. "Copy" don't "Cut" the episode and paste it into the folder you made immediately after you read this post. After doing this, my computer won't let me delete the file in the Temp Folder unless I come back to it later. I don't know why but I'm not bothered by it.
9. Poor a glass of wine or microbrew and enjoy the episode while thinking "My God, that Mayhem is such a stud for letting me know about this."

Note: This is how it works on my computer and my limited computer talents. If it goes different for you, so be it.

I hope there are other Iron Chef Japan freaks here and that this made their lives better. Allez Cuisine!!!

I've never watched the original version, but I love watching the American version.

Sakai-san was a BADASS on that show--"the dellacroix of French Cuisine" although I thought that made more sense to say "the dellacroix of Japanese cuisine"

Morimoto came on to replace the original "Iron Chef Japan" and he got in a wicked, famous "duel" with Bobby Flay of the US...where Bobby Flay apparently climbed on his cutting board and did some chest-thumping at the end of the competition...Morimoto was furious!

The Japanese version was HIGHLY ADDICTIVE....I really liked the strange "Japanese aristocrat" who sort of MC'd the thing...and the voice-over actors were hilarious..

Iron chef is the shiz :)

That episode is available on the site. Personally, I agree with Morimoto. It was incredibly thoughtless for Flay to even stand up on the table, let alone the cutting board. But the two of them eventually got past it and so have I.

Of all of the iron chefs --Japan version--which chef would you like to go eat at their restaurant? For me Sakai would be first. Then Morimoto (though he has a huge restaurant here in the U.S. in Philly I believe) and then I'd go to the Iron Chef Italian's restaurant. I thought his food looked great, he was just hardly ever on the show if I remember. I might have to *avoid* Iron Chef Cheng (Chinese) because some of his dishes looked a bit "hard to swallow"....

Japan is better, for sure. On a side note, I just found out the other day that Cat Cora is a lesbo. I really, really had no idea she was a rug-muncher. (She never wins on ICA either, BTW). :D

Sakai is my favorite, BTW!

Man, you've had me mulling over this for a couple hours now. I'll go with Sakai first, then Chen, Morimoto and Kobe, in that order. Honestly though, they all blow me away. I think it's easy to dismiss Iron Chef Kobe because he has that whole "boyish" thing going on, but this guy can cook!

I really liked how the Iron Chef Japan version would open the show with a nice career retrospective of the challenger. We'd learn about the challenger's background, his home town, the great restaurants they trained out and the great restaurants they worked at. It was almost a documentary kind of presentation and it always got me in the corner of the challenger. :)

I would eat any of the Iron Chefs restaurants.

If my memory serves, I seem to remember that the Iron Chefs were supposed to come to New York and challenge American chefs right arounf the time of 9/11...:( I guess Food Network pulled the plug on that idea?

I used to watch every IC Japan they show on Food TV. The American version is meh but I still catch it from time to time. The ego of Bobby Flay has me rooting against him every time. The one time he lost to the former host of "East Meets West" (name escapes me) had me laughing because the theme was ducks and it's obvious that that's not one of Bobby's specialties so he did what he always do with any dish, grill, which didn't bring out the taste quite as well as cooking in Asian style.

I think you're talking about Ming Tsai, right?

Bumped Thread

It's been a while but I just checked on the website mentioned in the OP and it's still there. Thought I'd bump this to keep spreading the word (and not get any bricks thrown at me for starting yet another duplicate thread). :elaugh::clap:
