Azhar Hussein, 56, was an assistant professor of aviation technology at Indiana State University.
An Indiana State University Professor is facing felony charges for allegedly creating fake anti-Muslim threats.
The charges stem from a series of emails received on campus in March, containing anti-Muslim messages and threats of potential violence against the Muslim community. The emails were first reported on March 8 and specifically mentioned assistant professor Azhar Hussain as a target. On March 24, Hussain reported an alleged assault in the College of Technology and told police he was thrown to the floor.
Investigators were able to track the computers where the emails came from and uncovered evidence to charge Hussain with sending the emails himself.
ISU Communications Director Libby Roerig says the university decided before the incident Hussain would not remain employed beyond this academic year. Officials immediately suspended him from his teaching duties following the charges.
“He had previously been notified that he will not be reappointed to his faculty position beyond the 2017-18 academic year due to his inability to fulfill the conditions of his original appointment,” Roerig says.
ISU Chief of Police Joseph Newport says they believe Hussain tried to gain sympathy by becoming a victim of anti-Muslim threats which he created himself.
Hussain faces a felony charge of obstruction of justice and a misdemeanor charge of harassment.
