I'm young, but I'm learning the world of haggling.

I went into my gym to cancel my membership a couple months ago. I used to pay $60 a month for a gym membership, but I told them I was transfering to a new gym that was $35 a month. They told me I could get a deal and only pay $40. I was excited and decided to stay with them since I've been at my gym since 2006.

I always thought haggling with companies was a no-no.

I got an idea
I'm currently paying $130 a month for phone, internet, and cable. I'm going to call up comcast and cancel my subscription. By doing this I'm hoping to get a lower rate per month. I really can't afford $130 a month while in school.

What do you guys think?

Good for you man.

I just called to cancel my cell phone. I ended up getting a brand new phone, (Blackberry Storm) for free and a new contract where I save about $15 a month.

Couldn't hurt to try.

what the fuck you lookin at?
Yea cable companies are pushovers. Especially in this economy. A friend of mine did that. He said he was gonna switch cable companies and they gave him free HBO and Showtime, with like 50 bucks off a month. Just sound serious and they'll all but suck your dick!

$140 a month (including tax) down to $95 a month (including tax).

For the next 12 months also :)

One phone call or roughly 10 minutes of work has saved me over $500!!! for one year!

For my internet, phone, and cable.

The ability to negotiate can make all the difference between being successful and not being successful. If you ever get the chance to travel around the world, you'll find out about "haggling" you can be sure.

I had a similar situation as yourself with my cell phone a little over a year ago when I crushed a handset with truck tyres lol ! It was an accident . :o
Anyway, I called to cancel the acct and they kept coming back with counter offers to get me to stay. Finally I did some quick math in my head and told 'em "You mean that you made me waste "X" amount of dollars all of this time" ?? !!! and hung up the phone.

Cuntracts are a waste of money ! Oppose them Openly & Loudly and move on to another provider

Well for what I'm paying I think the contract is fine.

I found out about haggling when I was 13 and went to Cozumel for vacation. This street vendor wanted to sell me a shell for $7. I said "no thanks I only have $4 dollars". Without hesitation he took it.

I did this by mistake lol.

It was a really nice shell.

Just glad I'm saving so much money now.

I do this all the time and it works like a charm... Cell phone companies, cable companies, magazines subscriptions you name it. If they think they are going to lose a customer they will lower your current fee but its not like they dont way over charge in the first place

Yea, it is what it is. Companies need the money to keep going and if you don't like it start your own company. Might even reveal some of the secrets why some things are so expensive.

I'm glad I'm saving $45 a month.

Wow...im paying out my ass for my internet. I am going to try this.

Haggle away.

With Qwest, I paid $43 for the internet/LAN line. It went up a couple of months later to $60. Then $80. I called in to complain, whereupon the chap told me he would use a different rate.

Note, though, my last month's bill was $96. This was because he cleverly neglected to tell me I would be paying for the changes on my account.

So, on the 'phone again. I expect the next bill to be $60. I also threatened to use Vonage. Thing is to actually spend time. If I am not satisfied, I will go as close to the top as I can, using the fact I had to spend forty minutes on the phone to the slowcoach in North Dakota as fuel. It is all on record. Qwest want to waste my time, they must pay.

What grates my cheese is that you are charged for a long distance 'service'. It isn't enough you pay for the line and the call, no, you pay for the 'long distance service'. This is a cheek and a crock.

In South Africa I never paid extra to 'phone Cape Town or Durban. You just pay for the line and the call. Now here they add on a charge because you 'phone out of State. How convenient.

Sure, it is another State, but it is still America. Besides, Qwest run their business out of North Dakota. They tell you you have a 'packet', but don't tell you you pay when a change is made, nor that your 'reduced rate' is still the same amount of money due to a charge for using a long distance line as well as the line payment you make anyway.

Still, I can't complain too much. At $15 a month internet is cheap. I feel it is pointless upgrading to a faster connection though because it will in any case be faster from the point of origin. IMO.

Example: Malwarebytes loads updates on my P.C. at lightning speed now, even though I am using the same connection speed I always have.

And you will... Do it all the time until comcast called my bluff, so i left them.
