Well that explains it. First rule of sex as a man is not to define issues in her alleged position, or her alleged inabilities for that matter. If one woman "doesn't open wide enough," there will be others who open even less. And in the case of a monogamous relationship, humans don't get more flexible with time, so you'll need to accommodate.
It's kinda like kissing and complaining about the size of a woman's nose. If you do it wrong, it doesn't matter what size her nose is, but the fact that she has a nose. It's not quite the "lotus" position, and it's almost like the "cowgirl" position rolled back on the Y-Z axis some 60-90 degrees. Whether your legs are on the floor while she's on the bed, or you are on your knees on the edge of a couch or large chair, the position can be quite controlling and relaxing at the same time. It's also easy to transition from a bent position by the male, to a more powerful, angled, straight action with less weight going vertical as well. The position also frees up at least one your hands to wonder to her clitoris or her nipple. Kissing and engulfing your lover also becomes easier. It's never worked for me either - my legs are too long and it puts me in a weird position. Just laying on a girl and grinding isn't as much fun as thrusting, IMO. Doggy or spooning works best and is more fun/comfortable for me. Best thing I've found is if you want her to be on her back, put a pillow or cushion under her butt and it rotates her hips upward. The most intimate position I've ever tried was with a girl who was very light and I was able to hold her up while I was standing and she had her arms & legs wrapped around me. If you have a bad back or she's too heavy, maybe not a great idea. But think of it like standing missionary.
