How do I verify that a certified check from a bank is legit?

I'm selling something of substantial value today, and I told the guy that I don't accept personal checks (thats just a no-no) but that I'd accept a verified check through a bank (I'm in Canada so there are only like, 4 major banks here). But how do I verify that its legit and not handmade? I'm definitely going to scan his passport ID, just in case it turns out to be fraud, and I have all his contact info but yeah, is there any way to know if its not real? If it weren't labour day, I'd make him drive to the bank with me and cash it then and there, but since its a stat day, banks are closed.
