What you apparently don't understand is that and old person doesn't get assaulted simply for being old, or a woman for simply being a woman. It can happen, but extremely rarely. While people get attacked all the time just because of their sexual orientation, race, etc., nothing more.

all the time for their sexual orientation? I don't believe this is true at all. The crimes are just media frenzy events and are blown up beyond anything else. I think Chef hit it on the head here. Straight white people are murdered every day but for some reason its not a media circus when it happens unless is a very very quite small town or an extremely brutal case usually with multiple victims. I know quite a few homosexuals and they are widely accepted as human beings just the same as everyone else. I am sure behind closed doors people make jokes to boost their testosterone and all that happy BS.

Why? I can't insinuate that a gay kid could do something that warrants an ass kicking? You're comparing two totally different things here. Now, if you were to compare it to a woman being raped, after she had teased and toyed with a guy, leading him back to her bedroom, only to deny him at the last minute (which would piss just about anybody off), THEN you would have a similar comparison. Not that the woman would deserved to be raped (not that this kid deserved to be murdered either), but sometimes people are responsible for the bad things that happen to them. Not that it makes murder, rape (etc) acceptable, but let's not act as if this kid is automatically freed from any and all responsibility for what happened to him just because he's gay.

Ummm, interesting how some people empathize with criminal and not with the actual victim. Don't we all sometimes act naive, or just plain stupid??? Does that somehow means we should punish the criminal less severely because they took advantage of a lapse of judgement?

It sends a message to the community because people want it to. If I went outside and beat up a black kid for no other reason than that he is black, why should black people in the community think any less of themselves? They weren't involved. They weren't there. They had nothing to do with it. But, they CHOOSE to tie themselves into the situation by pointing out their so-called differences, AKA - their black skin. People look for things to get upset about and this is one of those things.

Is not about thinking less of oneselves, it is because the whole community becomes terrorized and fear for their lives just for being who they are.

Hate happens to everybody - white, black, man, woman, young, old, straight, gay, tall, short, rich, poor, etc, etc, etc. But, people only choose to get all riled up about something when they can bring themselves into the scenario by finding some insignificant and ultimately meaningless comparison between themselves and the victim.

A gay kid gets murdered - "Oh my God!!! I'M GAY TOO!!! That could've been me!!! That makes this AWFUL!!!"

If you don't want people to judge you for your "differences", than stop looking at yourself as being different. We're all people and we all have terrible things happen to us. People need to stop pointing out their differences if they expect other people to see them as equals.

Obviously most crimes have an element of hatred, but when we talk about "hate crimes", we are refering to those that happen when the crime is motivated by bigoted sentiments towards a community as a whole.

Just like we punish terrorists more severely because they want to kill us just for being American, we should also punish those who seek to terrorize a community of people because they are "different."

I think A/R would say some people recognize at what point their position is understood and they fairly understand the position argued by the other person in the debate but they simply disagree. At which point, there's nothing to debate anymore...you simply disagree.

Or that some people recognize when a superior point or perspective is expressed and they have no choice but to be mature enough to say, "you are/were right and I agree".

So if you refute that perspective with what you believe is a reasonable counter perspective, with reasonable examples and on that point they are still unmoved by your arguments, why not just acknowledge you simply disagree?

Now if a different point is added or made then that may spark a different debate but two people can simply disagree.

Don't compare a terrorist attack that killed thousands of people to an attack on one man.

If a single American gets killed for merely being American in another country, that would be considered a terrorist attack. If someone murders a homosexual, just for being homosexual, what is that and how is it any different?

Just because more people died, in a horrible death as well, doesn't automatically makes the irrational hatred behind it different. But perhaps, using some people's logic here, is not so "irrational" and our government is somehow to blame for their harassing actions.

I think some people are in denial that homophobia is the main motive behind this crime, or that they themselves hold homophobic sentiments they are not willing to admit. I live in NYC, one of the most "gay friendly" cities, yet still here people get beaten up and verbally abused for no other reason than being "faggots." Therefore coming from an open city or country, doesn't rule out homophobia.

Like I mentioned, if a woman decapitated and mutilated a man who made unwanted anvances on her, she would be called the psychotic freak she is. But if a man does the same to another man because of unwanted advances, somehow it's understandable that this "poor man" would not handle that civilly. The real issue behind that line of thinking is homophobia, and that is what I am addressing.

If people want to get into a debate about the definition of hate crimes, maybe that's for a different thread.

I cannot change people's mind, they have to be willing to do it their own. But if my comments can help someone understand something, then it serve the purpose.:thumbsup:

People just going about their daily lives should not be targeted for hate inspired attacks.

Even as jaded as someone like you can realize the those typically discriminated against and attacked for one circumstance or another...were being attack and discriminated against long before there was anything for them to look at themselves about.

I've really learned to ignore gays hitting on me. It happens all the time. Just got a message on myspace from one of my friends telling me he was gay and to call him if I ever got "curious". I get hit on by gay guys all the time.

At first I was just like wtf. Now It's not really a big deal. I do kind of show off my body way too much.
