Here's Why Google Could Disappear in Five Years: Pro

Google may be on its way out as the dominant player in search, according to one analyst — and could even "disappear" in as little as five to eight years if the competitive pressures that ultimately claimed other search giants start to take root.

In the wake of a surprisingly weak earnings report, Eric Jackson, Ironfire capital founder and managing member, said Google Google [GOOG 681.79 -13.21 (-1.9%) ] could easily find itself fending off the woes that eventually took hold at embattled Yahoo! [YHOO 15.84 -0.16 (-1%)

"They could disappear in five to eight years and disappear in the sense that Yahoo used to be the king of search. Now, for all intents and purposes, Yahoo has disappeared," Jackson said Thursday on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street".

"If Facebook saw a deceleration in their sales and their growth lead to a halving of their stock price...why wouldn't it also be something that is very negative for Google as it continues to play out?" he said.

Google reported in its quarterly earnings, which were released Wednesday, that its cost per click (CPC) was down 15 percent in the third quarter.

While the company reported that ad sales had increased, it is likely that CPCs will continue to decrease, Jackson said.

The reason? Consumers are searching more and more on mobile devices, yet advertisers aren't as willing to buy advertisements formatted for mobile devices, because these ads are not as prominently displayed.

Also, mobile ads tend to run more cheaply than ads made for desktop computers.

Never happen. :nono:

I used to always use Yahoo! as my primary search. I liked how they listed the numbers next each descending search (1,2,3...). I also liked how they listed vids. But Google was just better after all. Tried Bing and didn't like that at all. Now I'm just totally used to Google.

Back in the day, searching was cool. You used different engines depending on what you were looking for, and exact string searches were possible...

When google came along, it really was something new, fast, and very usable. Now it's way to fuzzy in it's results, and doesn't like to be tamed. Since all of the old engines mostly rely on google tech, you get mostly the same thing no matter what you use imho...

Bing? What the fuck is that? Oh wait, it's like Zune, right?

If Apple had they're way, we'd all be using Safari...

They've been around for a little bit.

Bing is Microsoft's attempt at unseating Google. Bing used to be MSN search until it was updated in summer of 2009. Touted as a 'decision engine', Bing tries to support your researching by offering suggestions in the leftmost column, while also giving you various search options across the top of the screen. Things like 'wiki' suggestions, 'visual search', and 'related searches' might be very useful to you. Bing is not dethroning Google in the near future, no. But Bing is definitely worth trying.

I don't think Google will disappear that fast. And when it does, I'm not sure the reasons mentioned by the analyst would be THE reason for its search engine to disappear.
When Google came along with its search engine it was fresh and new, and it quickly became a hype. You couldn't talk about the internet without every noob telling you to use Google. Something similar has to happen with another search engine to get a decent foot between the door and become a threat for Google. But when you are up against Google Earth, Google street view, Google sketch up, Google chrome, Facebook, Youtube, ... you would need some pretty good stuff to make people abandon Google. Weak earnings might hurt them, like with every company. But Google has integrated themselves so much in every aspect of the internet that they have a stronghold against all competition.

Ya gotta ask yourselves... at what point in time will Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc., end up being "yesterday's coolness"?

As with anything, something will always come along and become the new "best thing ever".

For example: AOL. and web tv

You're probably right with Facebook and Twitter, but I don't think Google's appeal was ever 'cool' or 'trendy'. As far as I'm concerned, their search engine is the best, their browser is the best and their Android O.S is the best. No to mention all their applications like Earth, Maps, etc. And don't they own YouTube? Ya they're not going anywhere in 5 years.

I've been using Google since 2001...fav porn search engine for me is Sxx, askjolene, and sometime Eveknows. AskTiava use to be the best porn engine but that site sadly fell from grace...such a pity

I don't see Google being gone in ten years much less five, they may not be as dominant as a search engine as they currently are but they will still be around. All it takes is for someone to come up with something better.

It could be that new technology comes along that makes the internet, and thus Google, obsolete. Nobody really saw the internet coming 25 years ago. Perhaps there are hidden inventions being developed that will revolutionize the world in ways the internet did, but on a much deeper, grander, faster and philosophical scale.

Watch what happens. :)
