- Well, I could give you a basic response here. I could say that the chicken came first, because it needed to lay the egg, or I could say that the egg came first, because the chicken needed to hatch from it. Instead, I will say that what we now call the chicken is the result of thousands and thousands of years of evolution, and as a result, over time a species that was not a chicken became the chicken that we know today.
