For ten weeks, the media have unveiled several scandals , some bigger, some smaller... now, as the german parliament ('Bundestag') did state his immunity would be lifted for criminal prosecution yesterday afternoon, today, in the morning hours, he announced his resignation

He had taken too many favours from rich friends and it just bordered too close to corruption, I think

German President Christian Wulff: "I have acted without fault and always been honest"

German President Christian Wulff has announced his resignation, after prosecutors called for his immunity to be lifted.

An ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel, Mr Wulff is embroiled in a scandal over a home loan that he accepted when he was premier of Lower Saxony.

Mrs Merkel cancelled a visit to Italy on Friday to deal with the crisis, and said she regretted that he had quit.

German media say the crisis is unprecedented in post-war Germany.

I have to explain a bit, he is not what the US president is, he has the function similar to the english queen: represent the state, supposedly unbiased by political stance, and sign lawpapers, which only then can come into action. His predecessor, Horst Köhler (Who, interestingly enough, resigned, too) actually sent laws back to the 'Bundestag', as he did not see them fit to work out fair.
