So let me get this straight. You can put a justice, a lifetime position, on the Supreme Court with a simple majority vote but to establish a commission to examine the causes of an insurrection against our government requires 60 votes? The January 6 commission vote failed 54-35. The 35 won.

Good point. We can thank Mitch for eliminating the filibuster for SCOTUS nominations.

The filibuster actually makes sense when parties act in good faith, since requiring 60 votes requires consensus. Getting 60 votes requires negotiating. When parties begin to stonewall, we get gridlock.

The people often do not know agree on what is best for themselves. Some who think they know best oppose others who also think they know best. What is best for me isn't best for someone else. What is good for them, may not be good for me. It is a fact of democracy which is the best form of government we seem to have developed. Leaders who are not elected, seem to have less of a pulse on what is best for the people (longer term).

Others have stated it better: "You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.

I think President Ronald Reagan was right when he said that the less governments interfere in the affairs of ordinary people, the better people will do.

That is a very nice sentiment and seems very appealing. In practice it fails.

Do people do better when governments allow corporations to run amok?

Calling a large group of angry and delusional people who are basically in cosplay an insurrection seems like hyperbole. Besides storming the castle, was there any plan that has been uncovered to overthrow the government other than nonsense? One person was ****** and that was one of the rioters.
These guys stepped across the line and did something they shouldn't have contemplated in rioting in the US Capitol. Throw the book at them.

Calling January 6th an insurrection is disingenuous. I would examine the motives of anyone seriously considering this a threat to our democracy or a coupe to take over the country. There are already several investigations that are bringing in and prosecuting the rioters.

I agree with the original post about the voting requirements being off kilter. However, if I had a vote, I'd vote against a commission as a waste of money and there is no justice attached to it. To be honest, the commission seems politically motivated.

There were riots throughout the year that burned businesses down and ****** many more people. If you were proposing a commission to look into all of the riots and find the motive and cause of these riots, I could support it. Unless we understand why people are so angry, we'll never address it.

If they would have actually found a legislator what do you believe they would done? Give them a high five and say ‘see ya later’? Some would have yes. Others were there for ********.

Thank you for using paragraphs that make sense. I don’t concur with your conclusions, but we all can’t agree. And that is good. My views are generally centrist, but the current ‘right’ really makes no sense to me.

Insurrection: a violent uprising against an authority or government.

I'd suggest it qualifies as an insurrection. It was violent, it was an uprising, and it was against the very seat of the government.

It appears to meet the three criteria for an insurrection. Help me understand what I am missing?

Help me understand why it 'seems politically motivated'? An incident happened, so an investigation would seem to appropriate. Heck, the Republicans may even be able to finally find the hordes of antifa which were present.

The anti-commission position appears to be more politically motivated. The Republicans are acting like defendants by essentially pleading the fifth, stonewalling the prosecutor, etc. No one should be presumed guilty for either tactic, but we know how it looks in the court of public opinion. Just like when Hillary kept saying "I don't recall."

You are kidding with the last sentence right? I live a comfortable suburban life, but I don't need a commission to tell me why "[t]here were riots throughout the year that burned businesses down and ****** many more people." Discerning the differences between the summer riots and January 6th should be fairly simple.

That the stupidity and incompetence of the people on Jan 6 undermined their success doesn't magically absolve them or the people that instigated them to action. Thinking it's no big deal because they didn't succeed (this time) is pretty foolhardy. This isn't some random group of people that just coincidentally gathered got mad at the same time.

If there is no punishment for the people that encouraged this, what's the incentive for a politician not to incite something like that again the next time they don't like an election result? Do we have to wait until it's much worse or the perpetrators actually have a good chance before their is an actual full scale congressional investigation.

You make a good point. I may not be completely aligned, but no argument from me.
People being ****** is about as serious as it gets in my book. Those dead people are being overlooked more than anything else I see.
