FreeOnes borderline useless for slower connections

I don't come on this section to gripe very often, but it has gotten to the point where coming to this website is becoming an exercise in excruciating tedium and waiting for me.

You have added so many useless bells and whistles to both the main Freeones page and the messageboard that are probably generally unused by most people that it slows both sites to a crawl when there is no logical reason for it. I know it's bad when FreeOnes tries to download dozens of model profile pictures on the top page of the messageboard that don't even show up on the page. It's also bad when things want to be reloaded every time I click on a page to return to it. It's a lot more than just that though.

Now, I know you want to make this site good, I know you have to fit a certain number of advertisers in to make FreeOnes viable, and I know you can't just reduce everybody down to the lowest common denominator because some people have slow connection. (Although there are a lot more people with slow connections out there than people realize. Then again even for non-super-fast broadband this place can get slow, let alone dial-up.) I get that. I also don't expect to download video or a lot of pictures fast, or a lot of times at all. I get that also, but is there any reason for this site to take so long when almost an entire page is just text. Even when I use something like FireFox with a add on like No-Script it only makes it go from unusable to just bearable. I know about turning off signatures, but is there something else that I'm missing about setting up my profile. Is there some way to turn off all the junk the website wants to run when I'm going through the messageboard. There are too many times I would like to respond to a thread but after waiting minutes upon minutes for it to load it too often isn't worth it and I go on to something else.

I have a similar problem when I try to use my phone. The list of models at the bottom of the main page takes ages to load, and in the end there are only 2 showing. Also, trying to open a thread takes up to 5 minutes. Like D-rock said, getting rid of some of the useless crap, or perhaps making a parallel version of the board for slower connections, might work better for some.

You can close the "Latest OCSM Activity" and the "What's Going On?" sections.

I'll discuss this internally.

Maybe its good idea to have a light weight skin for the board (not sure what we can do with FO itself) and also I don't know what others think about this subject. So don't pin me on this one. But I'll give it a try.

I'm also stuck on dial-up. The only major slowdown when I'm on the forum is when I click on a thread with a lot of hotlinked or attached pictures - both those who are allowed to (approved content providers & OCSMs) but also people who aren't. Seems to be the most abused rule on the forum.

There's' also been one poster in particular who's been hotlinking animated gifs A LOT recently - bad enough when I run into the thread with the large pictures but GIFs brings my computer to a halt. I thought this was against the board rules or am I wrong?

Do not hotlink pictures and/or videos. Hot linking is directly linking to a picture on a different site or server and is considered band with theft. Using a service to host a picture directly for this purpose is exempt from this rule.

The way I understood that was that clickable thumbnails were ok and now youtube videos as of a few months ago. :dunno:

@ D-rock
You may want to also disable the flash player in your add-ons menu (if you haven't already) so the youtube stuff doesn't show up on screen. In fact that should speed things up surfing the net in general since there are so many flash adverts everywhere.

Why are so many people still on dial-up??????:crash:

the main page does sometimes load up a preview shot of the chat-cam sessions happening. I am guessing it is at random, and sometime some really bad randoms! so i guess that could clog up some 56k connections.

for the board. maybe there is some option/ or should be an option to turn off sigs or any attachments to a post. I dont know. I haven't even been here long, and really haven't caught any great discussion anyway.
