Anyone know of any good virus software that is free and works as good as the stuff you have to pay for?

Put SpyBot 1.6 on your pc as well, it works.
I had a trojan get past AVG Free, and when I put Spybot 1.6 on, it got the trojan, cleaned up the mess, and keeps my pc clean.

I wouldn't fuck with any free stuff unless they're time tested sources ! You may plant a virus, only to find out later, something that you will live to regret.

Google - April 1st Virus for a deterrent.

i maintain a list on my website, i link only directly to the sorces and not to any third party websites. i use malware bytes and spybot myself and have been virus-clean for many many years... be sure to install at least two (or three) different programs, one alone will not catch every virus/spyware/keylogger.

I actually stopped running resident AV programs on my main machine (still scan every couple weeks with a couple online spots) and have never had a virus detected (even in the 10+ years before I stopped using AV). Just use FireFox with NoScript and exercise a little common sense and you'll be alright.
Don't get me wrong, both laptops, and my other 4 desktops are A/V protected, but my personal machine is not. Yes, I am prepared at any time to nuke this entire system if need be.

Oh, I use Avast! on my Vista and W7 machines, AVG on my XP machines. They just seem to work better that way.

If you're going to use the free stuff..you'll need more than one to keep your computer fairly protected.

Most of the junk out there can be treated with a combo of AVG by Grisoft, Adaware by Lavasoft, McAfee Stinger, Spybot and Avira AntiVir should do the trick. If you know you're way around registry entries Hijackthis can be invaluable to remove browser hijackers and pop-ups.
These are all free, no trial downloads.

A couple of things to remember in AVG in order make your surfing tolerable you can disable the link scanner utility and AVG and Avira start in your taskbar so your desktop will take a little longer to come up....

Avast Home Edition or AVG

I use Avast Home Edition now. Free 14 month license for home.

This is time tested and good anti-virus. It had detected some viruses, that Nod32 did not deteced. Thanks Will E Worm for the recommendation!

I have been using Avast Home Edition for about six months. It proved many times that it was good defence for my computer.

It can be downloaded for free from their official web site. Very good software indeed!

comcasts internet customers get mcafee free $120 saved each year it is great!!

Well check out www.deals2buy.com... sometimes they have these deals for norton or mccafee in which you get a mail in rebate. so its mostly free. but you have to keep checking the website for good deals.

norton IS a virus.. it uses up all RAM and CPU power in your system, acts up at random times, and doesn't do shit, least of all catching a virus.

Avast.

Norton is the worst anti-virus software I've ever had.
