Former NFL star David 'Deacon' Turner shot dead by police

Don't the police have an alternative to just shooting to kill over any altercation, a taser perhaps or something :dunno:

Former NFL star shot dead by police after being quizzed outside a convenience store

# Police claim he hit officer on head with a bag of beer

# 19-year-old son was with him at the time

Former Cincinnati Bengals running back David 'Deacon' Turner was shot dead after a confrontation with police outside a convenience store.

Deputies were called to the store in Bakersfield, California, a little before 1 a.m. Sunday after getting a report that a group of juveniles were trying to get adults to buy liquor and cigarettes for them.

When deputies arrived, they spoke to Mr Turner as he left the store carrying alcoholic beverages.

He was with his 19-year-old son and a 16-year-old.

Kern County Sheriff's spokesman Craig Rennie said Mr Turner was cooperative at first.

But then he hit one of the deputies in the back of the head with a bag containing two 24-ounce cans of beer that he was carrying.

Showdown: Late night convenience store in Bakersfield where the killing took place

According to Bakersfield.com, became down on his luck after NFL days.

He was out of work for much of the time and got in trouble with the law

Bakersfield College coach Gerry Collis said: 'He’s the best running back I coached at BC, but heck I only coached there 27 years.'

Mr Collis, who had kept in touch with Turner and tried to help him get on his feet, said his former player was hoping to get some sort of retirement from the NFL.

He said: 'He was a marvelous kid. I loved that kid.

Glory days: Turner played three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals

He called me a couple times and I didn’t get back to him. I wish I had now.'

Turner’s brother, Moses Turner, Jr., said his brother was a humble man who focused on using his time in the NFL to care for his family back in Kern County.

When David Turner was inducted into the Bakersfield College hall of fame, there were many people there to honor him that Moses Turner had never met.

But that was, he said, the kind of person David Turner was — he brought people together and kept his family together.

David Turner’s nephew, Kevin Turner, said his uncle was an inspiration.

'He was the backbone of our family. He was our knight in shining armor,' Kevin said.

'When I heard the news I was in shock. I didn’t have a word to say.'

More police state tatics.

Even the police version of the events is fucking stupid, you don't shoot someone dead for hitting you over the head with a carrier bag, they seem to think if this is proven they will be fully justified in what they did. Maybe Mr Turner was pissed after they accused him of buying beer for underage kids and acted out in anger in the heat of the moment, they provoked that reaction out of him and now the guy's dead

I saw that: Police claim he hit officer on head with a bag of beer

The officers had no reason to kill him for that. If he actually did what they said he did.

I hope the video is on youtube soon.

AFK..being taken to the vet to get neutered.
The guy was black and angry.

That = shot immediately, ask questions afterwards.

That being said, whacking someone on the back of the head with 48 ounces worth of aluminum encased beer (that's the equivalent of a three pound weight: to give you a comparison, a standard house brick weights five pounds) is assault with a weapon.

I'm not saying deadly force was warranted, but you have to be some kind of stupid to start smacking armed policemen in the head with heavy objects.

If they had tazed him, there would be an outrage over excessive force. And why the fuck would you hit a cop with a bag of full cans? No the police had no right to kill him, and they probably could have approached him differently. But when you freak out on a cop, however warranted it is, it's the wrong decision. How many people have to be killed before we realize, keep your cool and deal with your grievances after. People are so fucking stupid.

Two words, "Kern County". For those unfamiliar with the place it's the county which decided to just stop issuing all marriage licenses instead of adhering to then state law of issuing licenses for gay marriages.:2 cents:

NFL stars play in more than 44 games. This is a shitty story, but heaping the NFL connection into this as poorly as it is done is weak.

:yesyes:

I agree. A tragic story for sure but let's not overstate this guy as being an NFL "star"....he wasn't. He was, however, a human being and that is indeed a sad ending for anyone.

That said, if you smack a cop in the bback (damn you, Viki!!!) of the head with a sack full of beer, you are unquestionably asking for trouble. Who knows what really ensued after that? Sounds to me like he was buying beer for minors and then got belligerent when the cops accosted him. Being a cop is a tough job to say the least and I'm not sure how I would react to that situation if I were one. Sure glad that I'm not....especially since you have to deal with assholes like this guy. :dunno: I'm pretty sure you could kill someone with a sack of beer as weird as it sounds (I would definitely NOT want to be hit in the head like that). And lastly, why in the hell would anyone of the African-American persuasion want to start some shit with a bunch of cops from Bakersfield (ever been there? it makes Texas look like San Francisco in comparison)??? Just dumb. Fatally dumb mistake. Sad story....shame his son had to witness his Dad's death. :(

Probably noone outside of Cincinnati has ever heard of him. It's to bad what happened to him but 1 am outside a licquor store and you swing at cops you are taking your chances.

considering cops have been known to shoot children with toys in hand, hitting cops with (essentially) a poor mans morningstar is not a good plan...considering that there are many options before killing to subdue someone the cops definitely overreacted

Why the hell did they call this guy a star? Three seasons doesn't qualify as being a star barring some career ending injury like Gayle Sayers. I damn near chocked when I saw the words "Shot", "Former NFL Star", and "David 'Deacon' '' in the same damn sentence. For a split second they had me thinking one of my favorite players ever, David Deacon Jones, got shot.

Anyway, we all know cops aren't usually people that are the cream of the crop of society. This isn't the Navy Seals we are talking about here who have nerves of steel. The probably got even more antsy when they heard the words "Black Male" and "Liquor Store". On the flip side, it was dumb, really dumb, to hit a cop with a blunt object, or anything for that matter. Not deserve to die dumb, but dumb enough to where he should have had his ass beat....German style.

I really hope the video gets either leaked or released by authorities.

I have the strong suspicion he did NOT hit the policeman with that shopping back

And: If The police told him he was not going to be arrested, why did the officer have to attack him from behind with the nightstick?

If you get attacked, you are allowed to defend yourself, if I am not mistaken

You are mistaken.

Also, it's very odd to be so selective over what you believe based on NOT seeing the video. Based on NOT seeing it you believe the suspect didn't hit the officer, but you do believe the officer attacked the defendant?

When a man (any man, cop or not) with a gun tells you to do something, whether or not it's justified, you fucking do it. That's called survival. Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather sort out my civil rights violations later while I'm still alive and able to claim and spend the large compensation settlement, than win the instant 'moral victory' by being senselessly dead.
