Feds Indict Roger Clemens for Perjury

Roger Clemens was indicted on multiple charges stemming from his testimony in front of a Congressional committee that he never used performance-enhancing drugs, federal authorities announced on Thursday.

The former All-Star hurler faces one count of obstruction, three counts of making false statements and two counts of perjury stemming from the statements made in front of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and its investigators.

Clemens faces a combined maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, although current sentencing guidelines would only put him in jail for 21 months if he is convicted...

Maybe its just me, but I think this is just another example of wasted government money, used in a shallow attempt to make a point after already having wasted at least hundreds of thousands if not millions of taxpayer dollars investigating the use of steroids in sports... Personally, I couldn't care less if players are using PEDs and neither should the government, IMO. Shouldn't we be more worried about people who lie to a Congressional committee about things that actually matter?

He must have fucked somebody...where is Ken Starr (sounds like a porn dude...well, he has publicly fucked some people).

Meh, lying to congress is lying to congress - wasteful or not, he broke a law and deserves punishment. And if they let him go, where is the line drawn.
Myself, I do care if a player is on PEDs. A victory obtained by talent is more just and satisfactory than something given to you in a needle.

I understand your point, but I'm of the opinion that simply taking steroids or HGH doesn't make you a better player. Stronger? Sure. But more talented? I think there's some debate there. How many players took steroids during the "steroid era?" Hundreds? Maybe a thousand or more over the course of a decade or more? How many "magnificent," or particularly memorable players came out of that time frame? Not that many. How many players hit as many home runs as Barry Bonds? None. And to be honest, PEDs saved the game IMO. After the lockout year, baseball game attendances and viewership were dramatically down across the board, nobody, aside from extremely avid fans of the game were watching. The HR chase between McGwire and Sosa brought a lot of casual fans and general excitement back to the game. Same with Barry Bonds and his chase to overtake Aaron's career HR mark. Whether those totals are "legitimate" or not, to me, is irrelevant, the resurgence in the fanbase of the sport is tangible and significant :2 cents:

well now they can spend or better said waste more tax money trying to prove that he lied.

And really, why was the GOV involved in this in the first place?

i won't ramble on about the misconceptions of steroids here, but there are many.

but to me if a guy who throws 100+ 90+ plus mph pitches every other day wants to take a medication or supplement to help recovery of the very punished muscle its no big deal.

It is kind of "funny" that sports fans ask, no, demand that athletes hit harder, run faster, throw harder and play no matter what and then bitch about those very same athletes taking steps to prepare their bodies for that abuse.

I wish people understood what these steroids and HGH did. They don't turn you into The Incredible Hulk. They don't make you a better athlete. What they do is prolong the inevitable at the the detriment to the athletes who take them. How fans can feign outrage over that is beyond me.

yeah, like i said in another post.
to really grow from steroids like testosterone, which is probably the most commonly used in baseball, you must first take a heavy dose, second eat all day, and third workout intensely and consistently with heavy weights.
I doubt these guys are doing any of the three, at least during the playing season.
people hear the word steroids and just react.
in reality the doses these guys are probably taking will only help the body recooperate faster, especially pitchers.
plus add a little water retention which helps lubricate the joints.
hell theyre playing 162 games in 7 months and traveling every 3 days, its no big deal.

I think for a competitive standpoint what's the worst part about performance enhancing drugs is that they put the people that don't want to use them, but feel they might have to compete at a serious disadvantage. (Faster healing, recovery, and artificially staving off injury is and incredible advantage even if no additional strength is gained, and often additional strength and endurance is gained also.) So they would force people to choose between potential negative health repercussions or being reduced in capacity or let go from the sport altogether. The competitive unbalancing from previous and current athletes and how to judging their accomplishments against each other is also something I don't particularly like. I would like to judge different people in a sport on as equal of a basis as possible, and not introduce more things that change the context in the environment they played in than is reasonably possible. That doesn't just go for drugs either I would also want to keep rule changes and advances in equipment in check also.

As far as him and the perjury is concerned it's always been my personal belief that lying to keep from incriminating yourself should be a form of using one's Fifth Amendment rights against self incrimination. I always saw actually saying your "taking the fifth", as inadequate to protect your right considering your pretty much admitting guilt in a way that can't directly be used in a court of law, your forced to tarnish your reputation, and pretty much any law enforcement agency will know to focus on you since they pretty much now know your guilty.
