Although they the STI and WRX make there Hp in the high 5-6rpm range where as a mscle car is arounf 2-3rpm, they are pure tourque
I agree with you. My first car that I drove was a 1990 pontiac 6000 LE and i only got it cause my dad bought a 95 nissan sentra, that he hated, and traded it in a year later. I think it had like 80Hp. There are really only 3 cars that I liked from the 80's. Knight Rider, General Lee and the A-team GMC Van.
Alright, fellow! You go say 12 Hail Mary's and go rub a Holley 4bbl carburetor for 10 minutes! I'm trying to help you save your soul, here. :angels:
Howso? I love old muscle cars, don't get me wrong, but in terms of pure performance newer cars are getting way more power for the same or less displacement, far better pickup due to traction control and suspension, way better braking, and above all, handling. Try to take a sharp corner in one of those old boats compared to a new performance car, you wouldn't stand a chance.
I'd have to add a Moon accelerator and a Hurst shifter and then ye shall be cleansed, my child! Oh, and a set of Thrush pipes and some chrome-reverse wheels wouldn't hurt either!
Yeah, completely different engine architectures: large displacement V8 (6-7 liter) vs. small displacement 4 cylinder (2-2.5 liter). Some of the 4 cylinders rev to 8 grand+. If you try to do that with most stock V8's, you'll be picking up piston and rod pieces for weeks. Every engine or engine type has a sweet spot.
Both an F1 car and a modern NASCAR stock car make about 850 horsepower with V8's. The F1 engine is a 2.4 and revs to 18K rpms. The stock car engine is around 5.8 liters and revs to about 9 grand, I believe. Very, very different horsepower and torque curves.
I was a big A-team and Knight Rider fan, so I liked those too. My favorite Trans Am was the 78 though. I didn't realize what poorly built pieces of shit they were until I looked to buy one years later. The General Lee, being an old Charger, I saw it as a 60/70's muscle car. A guy I went to high school with fixed one up like that - even had the horn that played Dixie. Poor goofball couldn't find a girl that looked like Daisy though... in fact, I don't think he could get any girl to ride with him. Danny... I still remember that goofy SOB's name.
I missed the monster truck craze of the 80's and 90's. By the time they got popular, I was pretty heavy into sports cars and formula car racing. A friend of mine and his wife had one when they lived in Pennsylvania (also in the military, in fact): big F150 with a 351, huge frickin' wheels and tires, a lift kit and the springs and shocks showing... flame decals on the hood and doors. I only saw pictures of it. Pretty wild looking though.
1967 Mustang has always been my favorite followed closely by the 1970 Charger.
