So can someone explain to me why in the US Congress where the president gives his state of the union address we have the symbol for fasces or fascism on both sides of the podium?

No, we don't all know that. Certainly not those of us who have learned more about Rome vs. other civilizations than just what was taught in high school (pop culture) classes about Rome.
The symbol's origin in Rome came about during Etruscan times and was morphed into the Roman Republic. It did not originate during the empirical period. And combined with Athenic culture, that time produced the foundation for most modern republics and democracies around the world today. Hell, look at Washington, D.C. (and many other modern capitol cities around the world). You could drop Cato and Cicero into Washington today, and for awhile, they'd probably think they'd been reborn in Rome. But like many other symbols which originated in ancient times (the swastika being the most prominent), its original meaning has been bastardized in modern times. And because of that, people now tend to look at them, add 2+2 and get 22.
Notice that the fasces in the oval office have no blades. And there's a reason for that, which relates to the Roman Republic... not the Empire.

good information points Rey C but the bottom line is, this symbol has been bastardized and unfortunately for the world this symbol today represents modern day world fascism which is not good for lovers of freedom IMO

When I read it, I already thought someone was going to react on that Roman Communism bullshit. Well done Ray C. Perhaps you should also explain that the Senators were selected by votes of the people, and that de democratic republic of Ancient Rome was found by two major basics the Greek already introduces, the words 'Demos' and 'Kratos', and that Demos means "people" and Kratos means "power". Combine these two terms and you have Democracy.
Perhaps you should aslo explain the traditional Roman fasces consisted of a bundle of white birch rods, tied together with a red leather ribbon into a cylinder, and often including a bronze axe (or sometimes two) amongst the rods, with the blade(s) on the side, projecting from the bundle. They were carried by the lictors who accompanied the magistrates. The axe often represents the power over life or death through the death penalty, although after the laws of the twelve tables, no Roman magistrate could summarily execute a Roman citizen. It was used as a symbol of the Roman Republic in many circumstances, including being carried in processions, much the way a flag might be carried today.
And so after all it has nothing to do with facism, and that's final, whatever will be said later on in this topic. It's all nonsens after all.
sorry thomas but I don't believe that Rome was truly a land of free people, my research tells me that Rome was not a Republic but a very totalitarian state in its own right, and it tried to spread its military across the known world for control and one of the many reasons why Rome fell was because it spread itself too thin kind of like another country is doing today so like I said the bottom line is the fasces today represents fascism which equals control of all by one
