"English" Language vs. "American"

First off, let's not turn this into a "which is better" thread. I'm just interested in discussing the differences in dialect, the different words or phrases used for the same things.

I maintain that the two are two separate but recognizable languages. One thing that comes to mind is "quid", "money", "Benjamins", etc.

I'm also reminded of a Louise Glover interview where she said something about "during the off" (insert British accent here), meaning, "being on vacation." BTW, I had never heard that one before and I thought it was delightful.



Anyway, discuss.
