Eight in 10 Americans favor legalizing medical marijuana: poll

By Stephen C. Webster
Monday, January 18th, 2010 -- 7:40 pm

The medical marijuana debate among American voters is over.

Eight in 10 Americans -- 81% overall -- support allowing doctors to prescribe cannabis, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll.

That's up from just 69% in 1997, the last time the two firms asked that question, and from 75% in 2003, according to Gallup.

The main divide among American voters today is how the medical community should be enabled to dole out the drug. The most recent state to allow medical marijuana -- New Jersey -- has the most strenuous controls found anywhere in the nation.

Legislators prohibited doctors from prescribing the drug to anyone they think would benefit from it, instead limiting access to patients suffering from a specific list of illnesses. They also limited marijuana production to a series of non-profit facilities, as opposed to the dispensaries popular in California and other states.

A slim majority, 56 percent, support deferring to a doctor's discretion on who should be prescribed marijuana, according to the poll.

In spite of the apparent national mandate for medical marijuana, just 14 states allow it.

When it comes to outright legalization, the news agencies found that just 46 percent are in favor. Gallup said in October that it had found 44 percent of Americans support legalization, while an Angus-Reid poll in December resulted in 53 percent in favor.

"Medical marijuana, for its part, receives majority support across the political and ideological spectrum, from 68 percent of conservatives and 72 percent of Republicans as well as 85 percent of Democrats and independents and about nine in 10 liberals and moderates," ABC noted. "Support slips to 69 percent among seniors, vs. 83 percent among all adults under age 65."

It would be nonsense not to.

I'm in for the legalizing of the mary jane. I don't use it but know those that do and are legal to use. I just think it would help some of our debt.... As long as the drug companies aren't involved it might work.

The government should just stop fighting against the tides and legalize it.

it's a silly thing to fight. the war on pot costs a hell of a lot of money and creates a black market which criminal enterprises exploit to the tune of who knows how many millions of dollars.

Remember that they legalized medical pot in California? My memories a little fuzzy, but that got rid of all drug trafficking and drug crime in the state, right?

Dumb idea, it will just create an even bigger black market. If people had to pay the outrageous prices that they charge for it, like over 200 dollars an ounce, out of pocket because their insurance will not cover it, they will just turn to crime instead.

That's because it was for medicinal use but still illegal in the eyes of federal law. There's drug trafficking because there's necessity to it. Legalizing it would drastically cut down on crime and trafficking rates because there would barely be a "black market" for weed.

Besides, weed is far more benign than alcohol or any other "legal" substance. You can buy whippits and salvia at smoke shops freely, both of which are also far more detrimental (and disabling) than weed. It just seems ludicrous to me that we can't see whats under our noses and help the economy with a plant. It's a no-brainer.

I agree, it should be legalized, not pharmicised. If it was legal then you could just take it for medicinal use if you wanted to, no reason for it to be controlled by the medical establishment which really just makes money for one group while not solving any of the problems with it's criminality.

legalize it, when i was younger i was diagnosed with depression (much like every one in the world) and they but me on so many different pills, i took them for about a year and they didnt do shit i just got the side effects. finally i decided to turn from recreational smoker to habitual and it helped. theres also a shit ton of other reasons to legalize it; economic stabilization, cancer medication, stress relief, etc

No it won't the masses will just be too stoned to give a fuck!
I'm surprised it hasn't been made mandatory! Keep the people docile! If it is legalized it will be the sugar on the poison pill. . .
Yes, everybody that smokes pot will somehow not give a fuck when it's legalized.

They're too stoned, maaaaaan.

what the fuck you lookin at?
I don't give a fuck about medical marijuana. Though it is damn good shit! I'm in favor of legalizing all marijuana! At this point...there really is no good reason not to.

I don't do drugs...but I think they should just leave people alone to do what they will...I sure don't want my weapons taken away that are there for my protection...but the government sure wants to disarm the public...has the Constitution become a thing of the past!!!

LEAVE US THE HELL ALONE :thefinger
