I don't remember Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson or Larry Bird mentioning anything about compensation. Anyone else should be thankful they are on the team.

I've been against the "Dream Team" since the start and wouldn't cross the street to piss on a pro basketball players mouth if his guts were on fire.

Quick, don't invite them to the tryouts and we can hear them complain how they were overlooked!

Re: Dwyane Wade and Ray Allen think they deserve compensation for playing in the Olym

Tried to cash in; failed.

Too bad they are now tainted by those who pay attention to stuff like this. Now to figure out if I should start pricing my rookie Ray Allen cards now or not...

Hmm. I remember thinking the same thing after the whole Kobe Bryant fiasco. By the way STDiva, I'm still holding on to the Kobe Bryant rookie cards, let me know. I deserve some Kobe compensation from a Canadian. :D

I'll scratch your back for them.

Re: Dwyane Wade and Ray Allen think they deserve compensation for playing in the Olym

You scratch my back to begin with, baby! I have many rookie cards to where you would do more than scratch my back! Now you start paying me some compensation to know more!

Well that idea will be shot down, considering Wade and Allen make more money a season than some of the 3rd world countries particpating in the Olympics. If anything they should donate a portion of their NBA salary to these countries.

If your motivation is money, then you don't belongs to the Olympics

Didn't there used to be a rule in the Olympics that if you'd ever been paid to play the sport at all, you couldn't be on an Olympic team?

Re: Dwyane Wade and Ray Allen think they deserve compensation for playing in the Olym

Wade just made a suggestion. Is he going to play whether he gets paid or not? Yes, like did in the Olympics before. Does he expect to get paid? No. He also made the same suggestion about collegiate athletes getting paid.

Maybe this would be more of an issue if compensation was the only way he would play. That I would have an issue with.

To be honest, I thought Olympic athletes did get money from their Team USA jersey sales (that's Wade's suggestion). :dunno:

There were several countries in the past were the athletes were not professional in that, if he was say a boxer, he would not fight Joe Frazier or Mike Tyson. But the country would pay for his or her housing, food, children's college, etc. Also they would be rewarded based on what medal they won. So then the question was posed were these actually "unpaid" atheletes. It was then the U.S. sent The Dream Team to the Olympics after the all college men's basketball team lost previously.

So then the question was posed were these actually "unpaid" atheletes. It was then the U.S. sent The Dream Team to the Olympics after the all college men's basketball team lost previously.

The reason why the Dream Team was allowed in the Olympics in the first place was because the rule concerning professional athlete participation was changed prior to the 1992 games. Before that it was against the rules for any athlete who received compensation for playing the sport to participate in the Olympics. I think the previous rule was fairer because it gave other individuals an opportunity to play on a bigger stage than they normally did, and allowed them to display their talents for the mere satisfaction of representing their country. It also made the games themselves fairer because it was really a contest to see which country had the best representation that year, and the medal was there for the best-prepared country. By allowing professional participation in the games they essentially eliminated fair competition from the games. Any country would rather send some egotistical steroid monstrosity cocksucker that doesn't necessarily play for the love of the game anymore, but will almost guarantee a medal for that country, rather than send some accountant or truck driver who may not be good enough to make a living playing the game and can't guarantee a medal, but will go out and play for the honor of representing his country. Before, any country that was sufficiently prepared had a chance to win a medal. Now, there are only a handful of countries that can feasibly win a medal. Case in point, you wouldn't seriously expect South Africa to have a chance to win a medal for basketball, would you?
