I haven't bought DVD player in years.
I noticed while checking them out many say will play DVD-R.
However they don't say what kind of files they play on that DVD.
Most of my movies are in the AVI format , some are in MPEG.

I asked a few sales people but they were unsure.
Anybody here know?
Thanks in advance.

I haven't used a DVD player in years, unless Playstation 2 and 3 counts.

Saying that it plays DVD-R simply means it will read the DVD-R discs. Unless it says otherwise, the files burned onto those discs still need to be MPEG-2 transport streams (aka .vob files) in a VIDEO_TS folder. To create those, you'll need a piece of DVD authoring software to convert your movie files (i.e. Roxio Creator)

What you're talking about is playing MPEG-4 files, which is a tricky proposition considering the huge number of MPEG-4 codecs out there. Even if a player claimed to play MPEG-4 files, I wouldn't guarantee that all your files will work.

all dvd players can play dvd-r. it's the support for file types that differ.
I presume you want to buy a blueray player, which ofcourse is backward compatible with both dvd and cd. I suggest going to the manufactures site and check out the specs, read and watch reviews.

Even though a player got support for a certain type of file doesn't necessarily mean it can play it. I bought a LG bluray player once. it said that it had .mkv support. it understood the mkv format, but didn't have enough processing power to play a mkv file at 720p. so read reviews, and not just what the manufacturer says.

Thanks so far but I really just want to play my AVI's on a TV with a DVd player.
My AVI's are on DVD-R's.
I know where I worked some players did, some didn't.

Their are two ways to get this done. First the hard. Here is Exactly what you need to do. Get the Make/Model/Serial Number and ask the sales guy that you need to know when it was made. Then you need to go to the Company's website. Take your time researching all the features the player has and if you have any doubts call their customer service. If you still have doubts go to a different store/different player repeat this process.

Choice two is real easy. Join Costco and I love that place SO much. Do all the research above anyway but, you have I believe a 30 day open box return fee. Just trying to help. Let me know how you make out. All the best Medic.

no point of buying a pure dvd player (if they still make those) Blu ray players can be very cheap.

This dude speaks the truth.

But make sure to get one with the "dongle" that allows you to stream internet wirelessly. That way you can watch netflix, youtube, and other shite like that right on your TV.

My dad bought a DVD player a few months ago, I noticed when playing burned DVDs, it never plays AVI or FLV formats, all it plays is WMV/ some MPEG.

I can't speak for all DVD players but the Sony and RCA players that we own only play WMV. I make burned DVDs with AVI format and I can only watch them on my Xbox 360.

I put avi's on a disc and played them through my PS3 fine
My parents have a really old dvd player, and i'm pretty sure that played an AVi file aswell, i can't be sure on that one, but i'm sure a blu ray will play it fine

sometimes, burning a vcd onto a dvd or even cd-r can get a dvd player to play some of your avi and mpegs.
