Define Flaming

As we all know, the term "flaming" is pretty subjective. What one person considers a flame another person doesn't. What is acceptable behaviour on one board is considered flaming on another...

So here's my question to you. When you think of the term "flaming," what do you consider it to be??

There is no right or wrong answer to this question so keep it civil. No need to bash each other over what someone else thinks flaming is.

Hey you wanted a sample not?

Flaming can be defined as any behavior, whether online or in reality, in which Sarah Palin's reaction would be to have tears well up in her eyes and start in on a rant about the liberal elitist media playing gotcha politics. If Palin would respond in such a way, then it's flaming...

I never understood you Roald.... Considering that Petra is a girl, your boss (FreeOnes) will almost certainly take her side in a conflict. All she has to do is show some butt & titties & you're fired.

If I were you I'd kiss her ass (whether it's earned or not), just so you can keep your job.

(you can thank me later, Petra)

;)

Now on to the more serious matters & going back to topic...

IMHO flaming is simply insulting another poster. Usually one would add without cause or unneeded to that sentence, but IMHO there's never a just cause or need to insult another.

Define flaming...

Well, I hate to name names, but any exchange between Philbert and HELLRAISER. There's only so much "OMG NEO-CON" vs "OMG what liberal fairy fantasy cave did you come from?" I can take. To avoid falling into the same trap, I'll tell you why:

I'd define flaming as any message or part of a message that insults without adding anything to the discussion. See above. That could be insulting someone or someone's argument - mostly the former. You can 'insult' someone's argument if you've got a better one and means to prove it's a better one - i.e., add to the discussion. Saying "that idea's dumb" followed up by nothing adds nothing. Saying "ur dumb omg did u make it thru 1st grade?" adds nothing. "u don't live in reality" adds nothing. You get the idea.

I used to like reading the political threads on here. Now most just degenerate into what I'd call flame wars, with sides doing little more than belittling each other. When someone (who's typically not involved in the start) does drop in a gem of actual information, it's usually glossed over to continue the flaming.

It's annoying.

Ah. Glad I could get that off my chest.

I see it as blatant aggressiveness directed solely towards another single person.

Debates can get pretty heated and this is a good thing the board would be pretty dull without them, I do not see it as flaming to argue against someone’s point in a slightly forthright way nor is it flaming to attempt to put a person right when they're so obviously wrong or when you believe they are.

Like I said above if a person is knowingly being aggressive for no apparent reason - along with direct swearing - then they're flaming. But as it has been seen on here in the past if someone enters a debate and their views dig themselves into a logical hole they cannot get out of on some occasions they will attempt to use the word "flaming" in an attempt to get those who disagree to back off. This obviously is not flaming this is an argument and that person feels they need to stoop to those levels in order to either "win" or to stop the debate in its tracks. If this is the case and we’ve seen this time and time again then it’s quite obvious that those persons who do this shouldn't have entered the debate to begin with.

I believe there should also be some form of punishment against the abuse of board rules when there haven’t been any broken. This isn’t just for those who throw the word flaming around as much as they can, this also goes for those individuals who like to report posts because the point being made hurt their feelings when there is obviously no rules against this. People need to learn that there will be times when you are going to be wrong on here and you should just expect others to call you on it and we’re all a bunch of sarcastic bastards who like to make fun so try not to take yourself too seriously.

The word flaming is in incognito for another term which we know as "instigating" in the real world. It's one who goes out of his way to start a "flame war" or in other terms start an argument, but in the online world arguments are different than in the streets. Arguments on the internet consist of verbal attacks 99.9% of the time and rarely escalate to violent fights in real life. Real fights in the real world do happen, but this is one of those things that isn't usually considered when talking about flaming someone.

The original poster may be one of the people who initially start the fight because of egotistical views or a misconception brought on by the reader usually through no fault of the original poster. It's hard to classify who is at fault, but the reader is the one who tends to escolate it to a higher level rather than the op intended most of the time. If the original poster did therefore both are at fault.

There is a difference between joking and flaming. If the flame is a one sided agenda and the original poster(op) did not intend for it to escalate then the reader is at fault. If the reader does not defend himself in a timely manner or just ignores it someone else will most likely step in if they don't agree with the reader. They will add fuel to the fire.

Internet Trolls: People who intend on starting flame wars because they have nothing better to do or too much time on their hands. They usually intend harm on the person, but usually won't go as far as physically hurting the person. They intend in starting an uproar in the persons views.

I could write a 2,500 word essay on this shit. It's a mind game people play on people. Remember Petra your a whore if you don't give me a blowjob, but if you do give me a blowjob then your still a whore. They will twist reality and your own views to hurt you. They usually know what they're doing when they start a flame war.

So Petra... Do I get the blowjob or not? Remember the incorrect answer intends something negative and the correct answer will be turned on you in a flash.

Please don't ban me Petra I am weak internet troll. If you do decide to ban me remember I will become more powerful than batman, superman, and all the internet trolls combined.
*hint* remember the part of fucking with your mind? Once you ban me my job has become successful, but you had no other option. In the end trolls gain reputation from different levels of being banned. It's better to not feed the trolls and let them die slowly and banning is an option of course!

I rather everyone just be adults and know that in reality these are just words on a computer and really can not hurt you. Once an argument goes ing ponging back and forth with no end i usually just stop posting in the thread. When people call me out for being in the military and thinking the way I do I just ignore their post and threads all together. Really I see no need to report or ban people, I think it is far more effective to just stop feeding them, eventually they will move on.

I do think that some people on this forum need to grow some thick skin and stop reporting post and running to the mods every chance they get. Hell we are all adults if you have not learned to ignore things by this point in your life it's going to get worse as you get older.
