Damn.. 14 min video of the storming of the Capital

I'm glad they're going ahead with the trial, even though I don't think there will be a conviction. At least we get to see all the evidence, every day, for as long as it takes. And then we get to see all those republican senators, in broad daylight, vote to acquit. And then, they must be made to pay. Hopefully, groups like The Lincoln Project and the fighting wing of the democrats will see to that.

There is "fear of the Trumpian base":

Just more evidence of republican spinelessness. They created the mess, they elected and enabled this for all those years, now they want to hide in the closet and leave it to democrats to clean up their mess. Any minute now the 2022 campaign ads will start up telling us that dems haven't cleaned up repubs mess quick enough and government should be handed back.

... This is just like Richard Nixon's missing eight minutes. :) which by the way, ended President Nixon's political career. Will the same hold true for Donald Trump?

I hate to say it will not. The primary difference being the existence of leading Republican senators willing to stand up to Nixon.

Lindsey Graham (after seeing the video and listening to the opening remarks): “I reinforced to the president, the case is over. It’s just a matter of getting the final verdict now.”

Trump's impeachment trial begins with stunning riot video

Likely the ONLY Republican congressperson that history will look kindly upon is Mitt Romney.

Oh - and McCain, for thumbs-downing Trump's efforts at debunking Obamacare.

From yesterday's fact dump by the House Impeachment Managers:
Ten minutes after finding out Pence had been evacuated from the Senate chamber, Trump tweeted:
"Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution. ... USA demands the truth!"

https://theweek.com/speedreads/9662...ot-knowing-pence-trouble-gop-senator-suggests

Another tidbit: Trump, trying to find out what is going on, dials the wrong number (UT Senator Mike Lee) looking for Tommy Tuberville.

Why Tommy at that point? If you're the President, wouldn't you call one of the other Republican Senators? You know, one of the ones who had been then longer than a few days (e.g., Cruz, Hawley, McConnell).

Maybe Representative Liz Cheney from Wyoming and Senator Ben Sasse from Nebraska too.

But sadly, it's not going to lead to a conviction. They all call for unity. Just to sweep it under the carpet. Lindsey Graham made his point very clear. He's made up his mind from the onset that he's not going to vote to convict. As will Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Ron Johnson and all those other Republicans who ally themselves with Donald Trump. This impeachment is a sham because these Republicans are too afraid of the ex-President after being fed years of lies, half-truths and misinformation from the President and his Administration. They also rely on him for fundraising. They need Donald Trump's support for future elections. In order to save face you have to be in agreement (mind and body) with this tyrant and oligarch of an ex-President.They are all chicken sh*ts. Loyal to the end to this despot.

I still go back to 'Why present any defense?' Save everyone's time: just rest and then let 34 eager Republican Senators show their fealty to Trump.

This impeachment is a sham

Can't have a fair trial when members of the jury are complicit in the crime. I don't think dems went into this thinking they'd win, they went into it thinking that if they didn't, they'd be complicit too. Hopefully they'll get him in the criminal courts, they have a pretty good track record dishing out justice for rich people.

What the heck is this? Republican Senators Ted Cruz (TX), Lindsey Graham (SC), and Mike Lee (UT) had a meeting with David Schoen and Bruce Castor to discuss legal strategy yesterday after the House managers ended their part of the hearing.

Isn't that a conflict of interest? They are jurors in these Senate impeachment hearings. They have to give the appearance of being impartial. This says to everyone, that no they aren't. The Senate needs to move to censure and remove these three Senators.

Anyone who goes to work for The Donald deserves whatever happens to him.
... or her: https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/

Nikki Haley pre-Jan 6: "He [Trump] believes he’s following that oath. This would be different if he was being deceptive.”

It was fine with Ms. Haley because Trump believed the Big Lie. She came around after Jan 6, but it was way too late by them. Trump and his enablers saw their chickens come home to roost.

Indeed. Recall the 'Oath Keepers'. These are the 'Oath Breakers'. Some oaths aren't worth keeping it seems.

Like Watergate, the truth trickles out over time. The same will happen here. Unlike Watergate where the correct action occurred, historians here will go "Why didn't they convict Trump? They knew." In fact, by the end of 2021 we will know much more - and go "yeah, we thought that was true."
