BEIJING: A Cuban taekwondo athlete attacked a judge, throwing punches and kicks, after being declared the loser Saturday in his bronze medal match.
He was given a lifetime ban from the sport for the outburst.
Angel Matos angrily questioned the call when he was declared the loser of the match for taking too much injury time after he hurt his leg. Fighters get one minute and he was declared the loser as soon as his time ran out.
Matos pushed the referee, then attacked the Swedish judge Chakir Chelbat, pushing and kicking him. Matos spat on the floor and was escorted out.
Matos and his coach were slapped with a lifetime ban from all World Taekwondo Federation championships for the outburst, which the WTF called "a strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympics."
"He was too strict," Cuban coach Leudis Gonzalez said of the judge. Gonzalez offered no apology for Matos' actions.
Matos' tantrum followed a confusion-filled day on the mats.
Earlier Saturday, China's double gold medalist Chen Zhong crashed out in the quarterfinals after initially being declared the winner. It was the first time a match result had been overturned since taekwondo became an official Olympic sport in 1990.
