Could forums be a way of therapy??

I was just thinking of this today. Could message boards be a way of venting or, in other words, be a way to associate yourself with like-minded people? It's like those "Anonymous" groups but you don't have to show up to scheduled meetings or get tokens.

We find a group that accepts a part of us, if not our whole us, as to who we are. The people I personally know would think I'm weird if I told them I think a girl doing ass to mouth is weird but here it is acceptable. You find a group that actually knows and understands your behavior

A couple months ago my *** discovered he had Parkinson's Disease and he's been kind of bummed out (obviously) about it and I recommended trying to find a message board or a forum with other people and he is now actually in a much better mood because he said he realizes he is not alone. He told me he felt trapped and self-pitiful because he was the only one he knew of that had it, but he joined a forum of other sufferers and he says now he feels he understands it better just knowing that there are others who also have it as well. That's when I started thinking of this topic: Could message boards and forums be a kind of group therapy that allows you to be even more anonymous?
