The NFL's last true Iron Man, Chuck Bednarik, passed away March 21st in his hometown of Bethlehem PA. He was 89.

I had a few conversations with him at Shula's Steakhouse in Center Valley and although I thought he was kind of a jerk (he always wanted his meals comped), his awesome football resume could not be denied. Best remembered for the knockout of Frank Gifford, Charlie was also renowned as the last 60 minute man, playing center and linebacker. He played for the Eagles from 1949-1962 and was enshrined in the Hall Of Fame in 1967, his first year of eligibility. His career would have probably been four years longer had he not served during WWII as a gunner in the Army Air Force.

To make ends meet he worked as a concrete salesman during the off-season and thus garnered the nickname "Concrete Charlie."

Sitting down with the man and having a few drinks and dinner, you couldn't help but occasionally stare at his hands. They were the size of hams. And they were twisted and gnarled, his pinkies jutting out at almost obscene angles after being mangled on the football field. He wore his rings on the few fingers that weren't wrecked and he usually had a genuine smile on his face. I do feel a bit richer for having known him slightly.

So long Concrete Charlie, we hardly knew ye.
