I get tired of this scam and know of profs' that are in bed with some of the writers/scholars/companies of these texts and make no effort to help students who in some cases are already in debt for years.
I, fortunately, am street wise so there were a variety of techniques I used to deal with this racket (library, print the books then return, purchase "older" edition) but I've seen many friends (some in law school, for example) that have been butt ***** by the textbook racket to the tune of hundreds of dollars for books that in some cases are hardly even used.
The worst is when you take an "old" version (i.e., 1 edition removed) and fine minimal, almost nonexistent alterations. That sure makes my ***** boil, almost as much as profs' who don't let you use them.
Meh. Big business. At least I'm almost done (for now).
