Codecs and players

Hope this is the right place to put it but i am noticing that alot of stuff i am downloading i cant play because of codecs. i have a k-lite package but that doesnt seem to help. any suggestions. also what programs do you use to take clips of dvds. Like just cuttig the section you want into its own clip. know what i mean. thatnks guys
