Chinese Internet users up to 210 million

Since this was posted, I think they reduced that to 4 users.

I would rather have them restricted ;). The last thing I'd want is to have them start influencing porn productions in their direction. (Yes, I believe their tastes are different than ours in the west.)

The thing that I am very sick of is NOT just blocking millions of internet sites from the West in China.

They actually go out of the way to arrest "you" if you post anything in the blogs against the regime.

Even many Hollywood movies sites are blocked.

Yes, I mentioned that in this thread regarding the Chinese made a big display of excuting the students following the demonstration in Tianamen Square. Google, MS and Yahoo, had provided information to help track down subversives* on requests for information by the government. They also provided IP addresses of individuals looking for information on the subject.

Google censors information on Tianamen Square, so that only travel and food tips are displayed if you Google the subject in China. Most younger students have no idea that the events ever took place and couldn't recognize the picture I posted in post #1.

There is also a link to the online PBS film, The Tank Man;

*a.k.a. disidents as we are told about resistance in Iraq.

Fastest growing superpower, you would expect this to happen.

Yeah, a real model for the rest of the world.

Please don't type out their addresses and spam them. :jester:

Xinhua placed China's online penetration rate at 16 percent — the point Americans were at in the mid-1990s. According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 75 percent of American adults are now online; penetration is even higher when teens are included. (China's stats cover Chinese 6 and older.)

I thought this was interesting, but...I forgot the point I was going to make. :helpme:

The Internet could always use a couple trillion more pieces of spam and more people with broken English on messageboards everywhere. Maybe all those lottery scams from Africa will be diverted there at least.

Well, US corporations like Google and Microsoft to promote business made deals with the Chinese government to block key websites to sanitize what Chinese users see on the internet. I mentioned when a search for example is done in China, nothing controversial or political comes up. Cute pictures of puppies and receipes are what you get along with travel tips. If that's not bad enough. Google, Microsoft and others were helpful in locating the source of requests for sensitive information which were then passed to the government with resulting prosecutions.

I think it was the 'Penetration rate' bit, that caught your eye.
