Can't play RAM Files

I have some old video files (RAM- I think it stands for Real Media) that I was able to play on my old Windows 98 computer - but now in Vista - I can't. I use the MPC-HC player, and it states "Cannot Render the File". What does that mean? How come my old system was able to play the vid, and now in my new system, it can't? I could not bring up the files using the VLC or the regular WMV video players either. Is there a quick-fix without having to download or purchase a program? A novice here. TY.

Real Audio Media (RAM) files designed to be played by RealPlayer. Real Networks, Inc., uses proprietary technology to encode RAM files, so the RealPlayer application is the only viable option for viewing these types of video files.

If a ram is a sheep, and an ass is a donkey, then why is a ram in the ass called a goose? :dunno:

RealAudio? Wow, yet another portal back to the 90s.

ASL? Let's meet on Microsoft Chat and make our comic strip characters hump each other. Or at least talk about humping each other.

Try MPC-HC PORTABLE,it is a zip file, it doesn't change anything in the registry so if the problem is with Vista, crappiest system ever, that should fix it, or try VLC or Umplayer portable.
let me know

I tried UMPlayer and it didn't work - VLC doesn't work. My question is how were they able to open in archaic Windows 98- and not in Vista- which is a newer OS..
