C & H Sugar Used To Come In 5 lb Bags And Now Comes In 4 lb Bags

I liked the bigger bags of sugar better. It fit perfectly in my sugar container. The 4 lb bag doesn't fill it up as good and I have to go back to the store to buy more sugar sooner.

I need the stuff for my coffee so it tastes good. Sometimes the Ralph's by me runs out of Land O' Lakes Half 'n' Half one time having the shelves empty at 4 PM with no plans to restock. I need that stuff for my coffee also. The employees are substandard because the manager allows them to be so I blame him. I don't know if his parents were married while he was conceived but he's still a bastard as far as I'm concerned.

My neighbor agreed with me and told me he goes to the other Ralph's. I might take his advice and start shopping there.

Here's their Yelp rating. The only good thing about them is that they're close.

Do they still have Von's and Safeway in Calif?

Yes. I think Safeway got merged into Von's.

I had some good fried chicken from the hot food section of the other Ralph's earlier. Never got around to ordering that pizza or other China people food I thought about ordering the other day. Maybe I'll order some soon or just stop by with the truck to pick up an order on the way home. This place on Pico is pretty good.

Glad I remembered to get those Honey-Nut Cheerios I'd been forgetting. Wasn't going to forget this time.

Sure was cold out there.

It's not just sugar. Dry pasta went from 16oz to 12oz in my area. Ice cream is 1.5 qt. from a 1/2 gallon. Of course the price is still the same as before. I won't even mention coffee.

Here in Germany, Müller Milch is a huge company providing all sorts of milk products. One of my lomngtime faves was the classic - you guessed it, "Müller Milch Shake", which came in plastic cups for ages, and you took off the lid and drank it, the problem was, of course, it was of no use for on the go, because it was nearly impossible not to spill it.

So when they switched to handy plastic bottles, I was so happy, and obviously, it was an instant success. And they didn't raise the price!

Yeah, but they made it 0.4 litres instead of 0.5 before.

I buy the "Store" brand sugar also in the 4 pound bag - it is much cheaper. The ice cream thing really affected me because I like making ice cream pies and going from 64 to 56 then 48 ounces makes the pies smaller than when they were 56+ ounces.

I was at the gas station and saw Gatorade in a 28 NOT 32 ounce container. The can of spaghetti sauce that was 28 ounces went to 26 and now 24.

I could go on and on but we get the point.

What really burns me up is when restaurants try to keep prices down but start cutting back on the food portions. I'm hungry, not poor, dammit!

I go with powdered creamer that's has sweetener and flavoring put into it. It last longer. The coffee stays hot. You don't have to put more than one item into it so it's quicker. It dissolves better than granulated sugar. I'm even thinking about pre-mixing my own combination of flavors so it's ready to go. Now if I could only find a good toffee flavor powdered creamer.

The incredible shrinking package. They've been doing it for decades. Bacon is being shrunk to 12 oz, OJ from 64 oz to 59 oz. Even toilet paper. Scott 1000 sheet rolls still are 1000 sheets but they cut the size of their sheets. Price rises are the kiss of death to products but if they reduce the size and charge the same we don't notice since we are more price conscience. Notice how thin cereal boxes have become.

The soda companies have been trying this in several fashions but it didn't always work. The 12 oz can machines were perfect for consumers because that's all we needed to quench our thirst. The problem was that the soda companies couldn't justify $1 for a can of soda so they switched to 16 oz bottle machines. Bear in mind that those bottles take up more space and fewer can fit into the machines but they didn't care. Their product is sugar and water so it was more profitable to make the switch. Eventually those 16 oz bottles came down to 12 and their plan worked.

However, they have tried to do the same thing with the 2 lt bottles with little success. Supermarket shelf space and positioning is cutthroat for beverages and snacks and the retailer has the upper hand. He'll cut a deal with Pepsi to move them to the front for guaranteed pricing and a free product setup. Coke gets pushed to second position. Next year Coke gives the better deal and they switch places. As much as they are both trying to push their 1.5 lt bottles for more profit, they aren't being price competitive to the 2 lt sizes. The supermarkets want to keep this lost leader of $.99 sodas to draw the customers in. After all, one week Pepsi is on sale, next week Coke, next week Canada Dry, next week store brand and it goes on in that rotation. You see the same things with the chips except there are so many different sizes manufactured that they can get away with downsizing. Not too much, 9.5 oz Wise can compete with 11 oz Ruffles at the same price but once you get below 9 oz the people will notice.

The first time I really noticed this was with coffee (Imagine that). Since I was buying whole beans in the bins and online it was still by the pound. I had to buy some and I noticed a bag with 9 oz. Not 16, not 12, but 9. I asked someone who was a little older and he thought it was just him. We half joked that whatever he had must be contagious. Now that the coffee people have been able to get away with it, online stores are selling it by 12oz units.

This sounds like serious business.
