Unreturned library book leads to woman's arrest.

An Iowa woman has been arrested because failed to return a library book.

Thirty-nine-year-old Shelly Koontz was arrested Thursday night on a fifth-degree theft charge. She is accused of keeping "The Freedom Writers Diary," which she checked out from the public library in nearby Jesup in April.

Police say the book - which is about a high school teacher's effort to inspire students to write - is valued at $13.95.

I feel safer now knowing they are tracking down these vicious criminals.

Spleen

Banned?
Vicious criminals are hard to track down, middle aged women are easy. Police get paid either way, so why not just take the easier option?

This just proves that in Iowa printed words are more valuable than in other regions of this world. Tax money well spended. :D

Maybe she was just part of an evil book-napping gang.Where the books are broken down and shipped off all over the world to create new books and are never seen again.People can sleep safely in their beds knowing that the cops are on the case.

They should just take the easy way out. :nono:

They are public servants paid to serve and protect.
Not go after people with overdue library books.

This is like Seinfeld and Bookman the library cop.

If she got that from a book that was a few months late, I know people that probably would get the chair at that place with the number of books that were late getting back.

When I saw the title of the thread, I thought that a woman was arrested for reading some banned books :) and I thought - WTF? are there such a dangerous book in this world? The only one I know, at a rough guess, is "Mein Kampf"...

It would be much more emotional discussion in that case! sorry for offtopic

Or The anarchists cookbook. But truly in my school days my german teacher risked his career by bringing "Mein Kampf" to his lessons. It was a smart thing because we could see that it was
a) booooring!

b) obviously written by a psychopath (Hitler believed in "the protocols of Zion")

Off topic, I know... will stop typing now... :crying:

Mein Kampf isnt banned, you can buy it over amazon if you want to. Why would you want to ban such a book. I would want as many people to read it as possible just to know for themselves how much of a wacko Hitler was. I cant remember the exact quote but its something like, the only way to achieve a better future is learning from the mistakes of the past.

So no Mein Kampf is not banned, no book should ever be.

In Germany it is banned.

I suppose its understandable given the history, but I still dont agree with the banning of books. Im not anyone to tell an entire nation what to do but it would seem after 60+ years, people could be allowed to form their own opinions of a man who I would guess a large percentage were not born under.

But I get why Germany would want to distance itself from him entirely.

Well, Germany bans just about everything related to Nazism in a truly marvelous act of overcompensation. Perhaps it's time to let go of the pointless guilt over something that the vast majority of Germany's population has nothing to do with and simply accept that it happened.

I agree on that, the whole banning and censoring attracts even more right-wing-minded people to "bad" media.

...now we´ve truly blown up this thread ;)
