Sexiest aircraft ever: Soviet Sukhoi T-4 "Sotka"

Meh

This Russian pilot has mastered the "Cobra Maneuver" and the Sukhoi SU-35 is one bad ass plane.

I think the American F-22 Raptor has thrust vectoring capability but I have never seen it performed by an American pilot.The F-22 program has been killed so the ones that we have in service are it.

This is my favorite Russian fighter. The MiG -29 The Finnish Air Force probably has a few in their stockpile> I know that Germany has them.

The Harriers been doing this for ages, yet the new take on the concept IS a great feat. I have to check back on a documentary about them I watched two months ago or so.

Something that really baffled me was the hard times the developers of the Osprey went through, until they fijnally got it right. That machine is what I believe every plane constructor at some time thinks about, but most seem to have given up. Looking at the curse that seemed to lay on that genius construction, it's great they made it :clap:

I liked the nose on the F-4 C much better than the long snout on the F-4 E model. But I believe the F-4 E had the longer nose because the Air Force also used it in the Wild Weasel ops.

Yeah Supa. The Osprey had many crashes until they worked out the bugs. As did the old Hawker Harriers back in the 1970's because they didn't have the technology and avionics back then to control the thing. They were basically "steam gauge" controls .

That is a good point about the radar signature. The F-16 and F-15 aren't all that stealthy though. Are they using the RAM (Radar Absorbing Material) on any of the older aircraft like was on the F-117?

I'm not sure, but both the F-16 and F-15 are nearing the end of their service lives. I think they're both being replaced by the Joint Strike Fighter by 2025. It's a shame about the Raptor though, but that really was overkill. We still have ones if needed at least.

I may be mistaken but I don't think the radar absorbing material makes as much difference as the shape of an aircraft.

I'm still not sure why the F-117 was discontinued and put out of service. The design would have lasted 100 years. When we have B-52's and F-15's still in service it doesn't make sense to kill a plane after 20 years of service.

I saw one up close a few years back on static display. It was roped off so you couldn't get real close to it. The pilot said it was because the material on the plane was sensitive to oils and such if too many people touched it, and it had to be replaced by the ground crews quite often.

The F-117's design was from the 70's. It was superceded by the F-22 and now the F-35 which can fulfill it's stealth strike role but is more streamlined and advanced.

Well, we need to pull the F-117 out of the mothballs because Obama (and his minions in congress) killed the F-22 program. Not sure if the JSF can perform the job as a bomber that the F-117 could. I know that the F-22 could carry an equal payload. But the F-117 was subsonic so that may be part of the reason it's gone.

From what I understand of the F-117 yeah, it was subsonic but also because of it's unwieldy shape (it's a flying piece of origami) it was a bitch to fly even aided by computer. It was designated a "stealth fighter" but it was no dogfighter, it was a stealth bomber.


Because of budgetary concerns, I think the days of the specialized aircraft are over. It's all about multi-role.
