Amy Winehouse's struggles to quit drugs were well documented. But her family fears that sudden abstinence from alcohol might have been what led to her death last Saturday at age 27, according to a report.

Amy Winehouse's struggles to quit drugs were well documented. But her family fears that sudden abstinence from alcohol might have been what led to her death last Saturday at age 27, according to a report.

Winehouse ignored doctors' advice to step back gradually from her heavy drinking and went cold turkey in the past month, an unnamed family friend tells Britain's Sun. Her family believes that was too much of a shock to her system, the source adds.

"Abstinence gave her body such a fright, they thought it was eventually the cause of her death," says the source.

PEOPLE has confirmed that this is the family's belief.

The cause of Winehouse's death won't be known for weeks, pending the completion of toxicology tests.

There have been reports that Winehouse went on a bender during her final days. But the family source tells the Sun that her father, Mitch Winehouse, said in his eulogy at his daughter's funeral that he believed it was just the opposite.

"He said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid bingeing at all costs. Amy told him she couldn't do that. It was all or nothing and she gave up completely," says the source.

"Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take."

Wow...at 27 hard to believe her body could have broken down that far from alcoholism to cause her pass from withdrawals.

But I admit...I don't know much detail about the process of alcohol addiction and how withdrawals can cause death.

Withdrawal from alcohol can cause seizures which can consequently cause death, but I've never heard of a doctor telling a patient with a drinking problem to "gradually reduce her intake."

As a matter of fact, any doctor worth their degree wouldn't say that to someone with that level of dependency, because it would never work, and it would come across as permission.

AFK..being taken to the vet to get neutered.
I would imagine banging industrial quantities of coke, crack, meth, pot along with alcohol might also have been a factor.

Just because you're clean, don't mean the damage you did while using magically disappears.

The woman abused her body (and talent) to breaking point for years. That she is dead at an early age is about as surprising as finding a repeat of Friends on cable.

For the EMPEROR!!
Yeah, I think I'll wait for more facts to emerge.

Is somewhere outhere.
That why she never went to rehab because she knew it would
eventually get the better of her

At least she made a mint out of that one :D

"DTs" is what we refer to it when the "think tank" isn't around. 190 proof "shine" can do one in, with brain damage and blindness being two minor side effects.
