These are taken from a local newspaper circa 1919 with girls writing in to an Annie Laurie.
Dear Annie Laurie: I am a girl 17 years old, and go with a boy three years my senior. I am very fond of him. He does not seem to be so interested in me sometimes. I have been going with him three years and this year he doesn't seem to care for me so much. Do you think it would be wise for me to continue to be his friend?
Do you think it is any harm to kiss him? Is it any harm to stand at your gate at night and talk? My parents object to me standing out talking at night. Please give me some advice.
Down Hearted
Down Hearted. I am not surprised that your parents object to having you standing at the gate at night, for it is quite likely to cause unpleasant gossip. When you return home it is better to say good night at once and go right into the house.
A girl of 17 has no right to a beau and here you say you have had one for three years! Mercy me! Until you're engaged you should not allow any man to kiss you. Remember that, me dear. If the young man has lost interest in you it would be far better for you to let him go his way for it is very hard to rekindle interest which has died out.
Dear Annie Laurie: I am a girl 19 years of age and am a graduate from the high school. As soon as I left school I fell in love with a boy one year older than myself. He wants to take me to dances but I can't dance. Do you think it is right to dance, and should I take lessons if I get the chance?
And, please, do you think this boy should kiss me? He says he loves me and I love him. I never saw him with another girl, so it makes me like hime better still. Answer this quickly will you please.
Uncess
Uncess. Nowadays most persons think dancing is a healthful pastime. If your parents don't object, perhaps you would enjoy taking lessons. But, my dear, never allow any boy to kiss you. You are very young, and will regret it later if you do. Wait until you are engaged to be married.
Times have certainly changed.
