Ads on MLB uniforms are coming, says SF Giants CEO

Authentic fans may not like it, but advertisements on Major League Baseball uniforms may be on deck. The NHL recently considered but rejected the idea of putting brand logos on hockey uniforms, and the NBA is tinkering with their uniforms in a way that may be very ad-friendly. But Major League Baseball may be the leadoff hitter when it comes to placing ads on uniforms, according to San Francisco Giants team CEO Larry Baer.

"I would forecast that it's coming," Baer said in an interview on San Francisco's KNBR. "It's just going to come in a way, hopefully, that's tasteful. Look, advertising has been a part of the world of baseball for a long time. Remember the old outfield signs that said, 'Hit it here, win a suit'?"

(Baer is referencing the "Hit Sign, Win Suit" ad for Abe Stark at the Brooklyn Dodgers' stadium in the 1920s. He's going way back for that particular reference.)

Fast forward to 2014, though, and you'll hear baseball executives clamoring for advertisements on MLB uniforms. "I think it's coming," Baer said in an appearance on "The Tom Tolbert Show." "This is new revenue. And I think there’s always ownership support for new revenue, right?"

Baer's remarks on the matter begin at the 4:30 mark of the KNBR interview.

"It's come up," Baer said of the ads on baseball uniforms. "In baseball and football, it's basically the manufacturer is the name on the uniform and that's about it."

But with new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred taking office in January 2015, the league may have a new outlook on advertising.

"I think it is one thing with the change of commissioners. There may be possibly a different perspective," Baer told KNBR. "With Rob Manfred, who presumably will be commissioner for a while, I think there may be an evolution toward it. It probably would be done in a way that's tasteful."

Of course, 'tasteful' is in the eye of the beholder.

In the HDTV and Internet era, advertising on uniforms is not limited to uniforms. The ads on a uniform will also appear on "SportsCenter" and all of the other scores and highlights shows. The sponsored logos would appear on the very popular MLB online video highlights. An ad on a uniform cannot be skipped with DVR technology, and the logo is 'always in the shot.'

Baer said that he prefers a subtle corporate logo placed on the sleeve of an MLB uniform. "I don’t know who would be on the sleeve or whatever," Baer said."Something tells me it will be a sleeve."

But when a top team executive starts openly discussing an idea like this, it's a good bet that MLB owners have something up their sleeve.

I'd like to be offended, but when I see where salaries have gone, I just can't. I love baseball. I'll enjoy a game between two teams that I don't give a shit about (mostly National League :D ). But I am very glad I'm not the guy who has to figure out how much a star player is worth, because my team wouldn't pay for any of them.

How long until the corporate sponsor becomes part of the team name like in the Japanese or Korean Leagues?

I can see it now "The World Series Champion San Fran Giants sponsored by Chico's Bail Bonds"

I just hope it's tasteful. What's next after that? Advertising on the outfield grass?

How long until we realize the premise of Rollerball? With everything being for sale already (including your government), we're almost there now.

What cracks me up is the premise that this actually works. And maybe it does, but it's beyond my comprehension.

This commercial has had me bemused since it came out. I'm supposed to settle for a shitty beer because it's been around for a long time? Are there people out there who are reaching for something better and then changing their minds because of this?

If the corporations are stupid enough to pay big money on a form of advertising that I am going to specifically ignore, I say let them. I'm especially interested in seeing which team is going to lower itself to wearing a Viagra logo for an entire season. Viagra and the headfirst slide. There's at least a dozen commercials to be had on that alone.

As if the Nike, adidas and Reebok logos on jerseys and sweaters weren't advertisements. Euro soccer teams have them and it doesn't bother me at all.

With the "Rollerball" reference, I am hoping it is the James Caan, John Houseman version and not that piece of shit that came out in the last decade.

Jerry Reinsdorf can just put sponsor by the Chicago Bulls on the Sox uniforms since their revenue streams helps him keep his baseball team.

Meaning since Chicagoland is Cubs fans, when they attend Bulls games they are helping the Sox.

I know of four teams (two AL and two NL teams) that will not honor this so-called agreement ...

The New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox (AL) and the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers (NL)

... Not happening!!! -- Especially with the New York Yankees. The NYY uniform with its unnamed jersey is a sacred thing.

The original Rollerball was an under-appreciated SciFi gem, and the remake was complete garbage.

It's not a surprise. I think the owners look under every seat for dropped change before the sweepers come out. My radio broadcast features sponsors for the pregame show, manager's report, dugout report, starting lineup, call to the bullpen, manager's challenges, 7th inning stretch postgame show, post game interview. Add in when the Mets score 6 runs in a game we get 1/2 price Papa Johns pizza. Homeruns or strikeouts total some cash to a charity too. But then again, if the Mets continue at their pace we could see sausage races.

My guess is we will see patches on the sleeves soon. A west coast team will probably be the first. Probably a Japanese company.

The one and only.
If the increased revenue led to a World Series title, I wouldn't give a fuck who sponsored the Cubs. They could be The Chicago Cubs sponsored by Tampax for all I care.

The Mariners are owned by Nintendo already...
