A little help for porn hounds on 56k

If you're still using IE - GET RID OF IT!

Try a Mozilla browser. Among other things, Mozilla browsers have three great features:

1)automatic pop-up blocking - I haven't seen a pop-up in over a year.

2)tabbed browsing - you can open links as tabs in the same window to avoid cluttering up your taskbar.

3)extensions - there are loads of great extensions for Mozilla browsers that add all sorts of features.

Oh yeah, themes are nice too if you like your browser to look good - themes are custom 'skins' for Mozilla.

I was using Mozilla 1.5, but I recently switched to Firefox. MZ 1.5 is more stable, FF has more features.

If you try MZ or FF, get the following extensions:

Tabbed Browsing Extensions
Nuke Anything or Nuke Image.

TBE adds a lot of extra functionality to tabbed browsing, and NA and NI allow you to right click on a loading image or object and "nuke it" - priceless for us 56kers, it allows you to stop ad banners and other useless images from loading.

Extensions:

Themes:

Here's a good Mozilla forum:

There's a LOT more to Mozilla than I've mentioned, be sure to check out your options. Mozilla and FF are more technically challenging than IE at first, but trust me, it's WORTH the effort if you do a lot of browsing like I do.

Thanks for the post, Svigor... I prefer IE6 with all the goodie updates and also I use the Google toolbar. I TOO have not seen a pop-up in ages. IE6 is fully functional, and integrates seemlessly with the Office Suite...I'm not changing, come hell or high water -- Outlook is GOD, and NO mail or newsreader program, contacts and calendar program comes even CLOSE!!!!

Even Netscape (which I once adored) is clunky and shitty, and SLOW as a motherfucker!!! I'll never use Netscape again unless they release a new "browser-only" version like 4.8. When Netscape "Communicator" came out, it was RUINED for me. blech

I'm using Opera v.7.23 and all of those features does Opera have too and without installing any extras.
The google toolbar is built-in. No pop-ups.
So my question is why Mozilla and not Opera ?

Mainly because Mozilla is free and Opera isn't -- you either have to pay for it or you have to put up with a banner ad. (I'm not saying that you shouldn't use Opera if you like it better; I'm just saying why I don't.)

What 'extras' are you referring to? MZ has tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking standard. TBE just extends the functionality of the tabs. For instance, I can change a tab's color, lock it, move it left or right, drag it from one window and drop it in another, etc.

I prefer Mozilla to Opera because of MZ's interface. I like being able to middle-click a link and have it open in a new tab automatically, the last time I used Opera I had to use a context menu to open a link in a new tab.

Plus, MZ's favorites were a lot easier to customize (for me), and the personal toolbar is a step up from Opera imho.

The Personal Toolbar is a folder in your favorites such that any folder or favorite you place in it appears on a toolbar. When you have a gigantic bookmarks collection like I do, this can be a big help.

There are only two things that IE has that I wish MZ did, well one thing really, the other is a problem with html compliance on the web, not with MZ.

1) in IE you can drag your toolbar elements around and crunch them together to save screen real estate, in MZ you can't. I found a nice skinny theme for MZ though so this isn't a big thing.

2) IE is such a dominant browser that people write non-standards compliant Web pages just so they'll display right in non-standards compliant IE. MZ displays standards compliant Web code perfectly, the problem is that half the Web is written with crap like Frontpage that outputs non-standards compliant code. So, once in a while MZ won't display a page correctly. Since ole Bill was kind enough to embed IE in Windows for us all, it isn't a big deal. About once a week I have to fire up IE for five minutes.

I thought about explaining in more detail why I prefer MZ to Opera, but then I realized that I don't care to. I don't really care if someone wants to use an inferior browser, I just wanted to point MZ out to people who might not know about it.

I've gotten more than a few useful links from this site, so I wanted to give something back in return.

It REALLY isn't about my wanting to evangelize MZ, or wanting to argue the merits - I've already done the comparison shopping, and MZ/FF is the consistent winner. As I said, stick with what makes you happy, I just wanted to point MZ out.
